There is a tornado warning near my house and I'm worried about my flock, even more so because I'm not even home and my grandparents are watching the birds. The torndo hasn't hit yet, so what should I tell them to do? Help!
P.S. My Chicken and duck coops are near trees. Should be worried about tree's falling on them?

If I were you I'd not worry unless your grandparents start getting worried. We have tornado warnings ALL THE TIME and only once have we actually sort of been in danger. Keep in close communication with them, and if they start getting concerned, I would put your birds all in their coop so that the high winds don't scatter them.

If it gets bad, could they move the coop with all the birds inside against the house so the winds can't tip it over? If it's a tiny coop you could even bring it in a garage.

It's good to have a plan in place ahead of time!
It's also good to realize that humans need to come first, and if there's no time to get the chickens, that's just the way it is. Sometimes there will be time to act, and if not, getting to a safe place is the priority, not dying in the chicken house. :(

We've been getting a large number of tornado warnings lately, but there's rarely cause for concern here. Are you in a place that has them touch down often? First and foremost, don't have your grandparents running around in impending tornado conditions :old but this is a perfect opportunity to get a plan in place for next time. Chickens are notoriously good at surviving and dodging a falling branch if you don't have an opportunity to go settle them in

No, we rarely get storms like that one. The reason the grandparents are there is my family is at the cottage, much to my dislike :( I would rather be home with the hens, but hey, it is what it is.
And now we do have a plan. Thanks guys!

I live in North Alabama, tornado alley. The only thing you can do is make sure your coop is anchored into the ground. Once a warning has been issued, you do not have time to go scurrying around, you need to be getting into a safe spot because you only have minutes to react.
