My dad was talking about the dog finding a couple opossums, and thinking they were dead, when actually they were playing 'possum! I guess he tossed one in the garbage can and the next morning heard it rattling around in there.

I will probably set the trap out again. I dunno if I will get into killing the raccoons. I live in the city and I don't really want to be dealing with disposing of carcasses, much less trying to humanely kill these relatively intelligent animals.

I see the point of making the raccoon someone else's problem, but I think that depends on where I take it. I think people who live outside of the city would probably expect raccoons to be in the area anyway.

In Oregon, raccoons are classified as a Furbearer or Furbearing Mammal, and they are protected, with seasons established for hunting (OAR 635-050-0052).

Raccoons may be live trapped and relocated with a permit available from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife
