Toulouse Geese Thread

Hi there Fearnowsh
I have a pair of ladies about same age as yours . They started laying March 7, had a couple beautiful eggs , then 3 no shell. I really don't know what fixed it but
Thanks to this community and a zillion conversations with miss Lydia they are back to regular laying and beautiful eggs.
I am still giving them a mix of layer pellets and Masuri waterfowl - I also added oyster shell mixed with the pellets and available separately ( previously I was offering granite grit) then I started adding nutritional yeast sprinkled over the pellets daily. I cut back on their greens that I was feeding because they were eating the greens and not the pellets and I wanted them to get the nutrition from pellets .
Miss Lydia is awesome and stuck with me . Maybe she'll see your post and help you also .
Hi equustears

From what you did, maybe I will try adding in some nutritional yeast. How much did you add? I do throw in a small handful of crushed egg shells at least twice a week. Maybe I could try providing her with more of that as well. Any idea if I should use actual oyster shell vs crushed egg shells? I was worried about the gander (Brutus) maybe getting too much of it, that's why I was only giving it 2-3 times a week. I just have to keep trying things!! Thanks for the ideas

Lucy, my goose, laid one good egg, then one with no shell, then 5 good ones, and now all without shells.

Nutritional yeast dosage 1 Tab per cup of feed. and she needs Oyster shell unless you can give her egg shells everyday because it takes alot of calcium to produce an egg and if they don't get it in their diet then it will come out of their bones. You can also give her in her drinking water calcium citrate I by capsules and open and pour into their drinking buckets. I have 31 birds so I put the calcium into only one of the drinking buckets . It's hard to know how much they actually are getting but The soft shell my buff was laying isn't happening any longer. As for keeping oyster shell out all the time that way they know instinctively how much they need and will eat it as needed. My drakes ganders nor rooster eat it.They may nibble at first but they don't eat it.

Hi again fearnowsh
I have a 2x4 nailed across the end of the goose house like a rail. I bought feeders at tractor supply that hang over the rail. They stay on really well but can be easily removed and cleaned. I keep feed in one ( next to the water bucket) and the grit in another feeder . I don't think I'd worry about the gander getting too much .
Oyster shells are what the community had suggested. I know chickens can be fed their egg shells , don't know that it's enough to help grind their food to get the nutrition.

egg shells and oyster shells are used for calcium which is what the hens use to creates the shell on the outside of the egg to little and you get shellless eggs to much they have calcium deposits on the outside of the shell which is no big deal

Hello, I have one goose. She was a drop off. Her name is Gus. I have no clue what her breed is. We are currently looking for another goose. His has lived with us for three years and made at least i nest every year.We feel bad that she sits and never has babies but we are getting another goose hopefully.

Here is a link that may help you discover what breed Gs is or post a pic here and we'll try and help. Good luck finding her a mate. @flufssilkies

Hey everyone. I have seven geese and I'm still unsure if I have two or three ganders and the other's geese???

One bird hisses every now and then, but not very often. I was told only ganders hiss, is that always true? I have seen this same bird get in a fight with another gander and I've seen him mount a female. I assumed 100% gander.

Now this same bird is building a nest, setting on the nest and acting generally like a girl? (No one is broody right now, they just seem protective of their nests, this one will leave the nest) He/she has always been more subdued and very rarely aggressive and hardly ever hisses like a male.

So do I have a goose, a gander, or a gender confused bird?

I am getting eight goslings and I was wondering if I keep three females and one male would he mate all of them or would I just have one female getting mated?(raising for meat)
