Tractor Supply chicks: Breeds?

And good luck having someone there who knows! If it's not on their pre-printed sign, most have no clue.

I went into the tractor supply here in New Mexico and they had a bunch of yellow ducklings and btw $4.95 Ea of course no staff attending so I went up front and asked what kind of ducks and the cashier said "duck, duck" needless to say I left the store...they also had some cornish cross chicks...the only reason i found out the breed of them was I was there when the guy (not politely) told me what they were....I will spend the shipping money and order what i want...

I bought my ducklings from my local TSC, I did lots of research first and was able to find out where my store got their stock from. So when I saw the yellow large ducklings I knew they were the Peking ducks. They are the only yellow babies they buy. And I paid $6.50 a head for mine. Lesson learned, next year will buy straight from the hatchery. My TSC, the kids working there are very honest about not knowing which animal is which breed.

As someone said above and the first time i have seen someone besides myself make the point. We sell chicks for just short of 3 months.When you consider how much training would be involved to get everyone up to speed on the breeds, the differences, and be fairly knowledgeable about the whole process the season is over and it's irrelevant for another year. Just because someone works in a farm store doesn't necessarily mean chickens are their forte. Believe me i worked at Home Depot for 8 years and there were some very unqualified people working beside me. We have 3 employees who are very knowledgeable about chickens and those are the 3 who answer the detailed questions. If someone wants a chick anyone will grab what they ask for and take care of that customer but the moment the questions go beyond the basics then everyone knows to grab one of the more knowledgeable people to answer the specific questions. It works out very well for us. As i stated in my rant somewhere else in this site, I would never ask the bag boy how to make lasagna simply because he works at the grocery store.

So I went to TSC yesterday like I said and the employee asked me if these chicks are red sexlinks. They were different in that some had stripes down their sides. I said they are probably cockerals. As we talked she said they were marked "straight run", so of course I knew then I was right.

The new "Out There" is out now. Something I look forward too. It had an article on RIR whites and the cross for sex links.

Also they got the "Practical Poultry" magazine back.

Not cheap for $8.25 but a good thing for me. One of my favorites.

I have missed to many issues.


Oh and I didn't buy any chicks or ducks. If they had geeses I might have but I can resist the extra work with the others.

Wow, some of you are paying a pretty penny for ducklings! I bought 3 from TSC a couple of weeks ago, and paid only $4.38 for all of them (and that's with our 9% sales tax)!

Hi everyone. Last week I purchased 4 pekin ducks at one of our local TSC on sale/mark down for $2 each. I couldn't leave without some. The sale person said that they were on sale because they were getting big. I forgot to ask how old, but I'm guessing 2 weeks. This is my first time raising ducks and really enjoying it. They are cute and fun.

Magazines are like sporting events. Less people attend so they raise the price to make up for less ticket sales which in turn, sells less tickets. Everything in a magazine can be found online for free these days so magazine sales are suffering.

I prefer a hard copy to the internet. I'm sure there are alot of folks who aren't like me. One trouble I have is in over abundance of information, or information overload. I just can't read fast enough to keep up with all that is out there.

As far as PP is concerned all magazines have gone up in price. That's just the way the economy works. When our parents were paying 5 cents for a loaf of bread they made about $14 a week. My mother used to tell me this. So as I say, such is life.

I'll still buy the PP as long as I have chickens.

That's a major part of the reason why the forum has so many threads with people saying, "I got these chicks fromTSC - can you tell me what they are?" That was the store's job.

TSC is working with several new hatcheries this year and pullets were coming in to stores without being labeled by breed, from the hatchery. Obviously that's a big problem for everyone who wants to know exactly what they're getting! Now that new shipments of chicks are on their way to stores, the hatcheries are going to label the pullets going forward.

Dont matter to me. I have no more room.

Plus I hatch my own. I have ten new Delawares in the brooder and one lavender EE that I suspect is a roo from the thickness of it's legs. I also have eggs in the incubator. The two I want to hatch most are the two C. Rocks.
