i bought two last year and the one that survived is a drake.they didnt have them sexed either.

I've bought both chickens and ducks from Tractor Supply in the past. The majority of the chickens ended up being hens. The majority of the ducks were drakes. Sometimes they sex them at our store but little kids like to pick them up and not put them back in the stock tank that they took them out of so you end up sometimes not getting what you thought you were. In our state, you must buy a minimum of 6. Our local Tractor Supply gets them from Mt. Healthy Hatchery.

Yea i got ducks from there and they were awsome. But if you want to get ducks from there then you need alot of space. I kept them in a guinea pig cage for the first week(they were small enough then) and they out grew it. right away. Within a mont they were fully-grown. Also when they are chicks its none/stop eat, drink, and well you know. So every ten minutes I was refilling there water. They loved to splash all around in it and then drink it. They ran (or flew) away one night when I did'nt close them up though. :(

I got 3 ducks (straight run) The box was marked "Rouen". Guess what.. they were ALL mallards. Not really what I was wanting. But I love them now.

I also got 3 Sex link pullets. Our store had a couple boxes marked "Pullets".

Our minimum is also 6.

If I were you, I'd order from a hatchery and ensure all females. :)

I will have to stay out of the TSC here in a month when they come in. I can't resist those little fluffy butts.

Thats why i don't go to TSC when they have chicks and ducklings.

I think the problem with buying them from TSC is that the employees aren't educated on the chicks and ducklings. They order them from larger hatcheries just to sell in the springtime. TSC employees don't usually know much about the chicks other than what they are told. My friend works at one near me and she said that the people who work there simply look at a picture in a book to figure out which breed is which. They do come separated by breed but there are people who pick them up and put them down and it's very easy to get them mixed up.
And yes, they come straight run. SO unless you know how to sex chicks and ducklings, you run the risk of getting males and females.
My friend brought me 4 pekins last spring. Someone had gone to TSC and wanted 2 ducklings. They sell them in groups of 6, so they bought 6 and gave her 4 which she then gave to me. I ended up with 3 drakes and 1 hen. Not very good odds!
