Tractor Supply?

just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in... I purchased 2 chicks for Easter for my kids 3 years ago, on an impulse!! I knew absolutely nothing about raising chickens, but thanks to this board, I can say I have learned a lot!! Of course a month after I bought those 2 chicks, I bought 25 more, and have gained a few and lost a few, had over 65 chickens at one time. I happen to think I am a pretty decent chicken farmer/egg seller and my girls are very spoiled and well taken care of. None of this would have happened had I not been in my local TSC for gardening stuff and ended up with 2 baby "Easter" chicks. My TSC has been very polite and helpful, and of course I know not all of their sales people know everything about raising chickens. That's what this board is for

btw, I have 16 eggs in the bator and just ordered another 30 chicks from Mt Healthy. I really don't think there should be a mandated minimum order because what if I just wanted a couple more?

I read our city ordinance it says chicks can only be sold in lots of 5. Why is this to help stop impulse buyers from buying just one chick for Easter. We can have ducks in town but due to all the people who have bought ducks for Easter and then let them go in the park you can no longer buy ducks if you live in town now I know my farm store enforces this rule Tractor supply does not. I am not even sure that they enforce the rule about 5 chicks. I don't blame tractor supply they are selling what the corporate office tells them to sale. I don't shop there much. I like my other farm store. It just like all the puppies and kittens bought for Christmas that end up at the pound when they grow to big or are no longer a cute puppy or kitten. Don't blame the seller blame the people who buy animals then throw them away. If there was no market then they would not breed these animals. Sorry blaming the wrong people. IMO

just a question. Do you that have to buy so many chicks live in bigger towns and cities? I have gone to 4 different farm and home store and have not run into this. but each has been in small towns. I was just curious.

i think it depends on the local laws... if you can only have X number of chickens by a local law (for example, limit in baltimore city is 3), then they can not force you to buy more than X (in city example- 3).

Here the law in Salina, Ks population of about 55,000 you have to buy 5 chicks minimum. We can have up to 15 chickens in town

We have to buy six chicks here and a minimum of two ducks. We also have to fill out a form stating how many chicks you purchased, your name, and address.

calle

min :

Here in NY you have to buy a min of 6 chicks. this law will stop the impulse buyer ( or at least make them think twice) from buying cute little chicks for little Johnny and little Debbie. As for them taking names and addresses and following up on their care.....well that is an invasion of their privacy.
don't ya think?
