Ha ha, another stupid Californian fad, supposed to be better for you

I really get embarrassed being one...
Possibly or else it's another marketing ploy for people who just want to hatch chicks as a project.....
LOL, same thing

My TJ chicks are 3 weeks now. One has splayed leg. I guess I am going to find out how leghorn chickens taste! I hear that there is not much meat, but that's ok.
Did you try taping it's legs together? Might still help, still quite young? Worth it if she's a girl to keep her for her eggs!
Here they are! These are the Rock Island babies. Four hatched this weekend. One was waiting for me when I got home from work Friday - the four really did space out their hatches as well! So polite - allowed each other to finish. :) Eleven (out of a dozen) made it to lockdown, but just the four emerged. I wonder if my forced air incubator made the air too dry? Anyway, I'm pleased with them. They are all pale yellow, and one has a black dot on its back.

Awww, so cute, look at those fuzzy butts!!!

They are supposed to be extra healthy somehow. Nothing that can be proven or anything, just a health food movement that's happening currently.
One of many......

Well, my six TJ's are a month old. I got another added bonus lesson. Don't buy leghorns, unless you like meth-addicted speed freak chickens!

We've been hand-holding and taking care of them, but they are just the most skittish little things!

Hahaaha! Isn't that the truth? My Whole Foods babies are only part Leghorn, and they make me tired just watching them race around the brooder. I've got to update pictures of them tonight, they've grown so much!

Though, with Godzilla.... size is not surprising. Any day now he'll turn green and destroy Tokoyo.

As a matter of fact, these guys are destined for the barbeque as soon as they're big enough.

Looks like a couple of hens and four roosters. I have them in a grow out brooder, and they're just so nervous, you almost can't go in to give them food! The New Hampshires next door, meanwhile, crawl all over our arms as we take care every day.

Theyre feed to egg production is what is good about them. I was on a site where you could get a bunch of rooster chicks,LH and theyre idea was to just let them live a few weeks and then clean em and use them as young fryers. No i dont remember where i read this. I dont know how tasty young LH are.
Im thinking of getting a veriety of LH and some standard sex links and compare how much they eat and produce. Some folks like brown eggs and some like white.

I can finally join soon! I've been scouring markets and health food places for fertile eggs, and I finally found some today! I've got to wait for the duck eggs to get out of the incubator this weekend, but once its cleaned good, I'm getting eggs and keeping my fingers crossed! I'll post information about the store where I found the eggs and the brand of the eggs once I have them in hand.
I just hatched chicken eggs (not store-bought) this week for my biology classes, and already have more reservations for chicks than I have chicks! The backyard chicken phenomenon is really catching on in our area, and I'm happy to contribute to it! And darn, that just means I have to hatch more!

Am I the only one who doesn't feel this way? The leghorns may fly more but I find them just as calm. I love my TJ rooster. I'm gathering some of his eggs to hatch - not eggs he layed but eggs he fertilized them. I'm going to have yo get a picture of him soon for you all.

Boy , that's neat! I sure wish mine weren't quite so terrified. Like I say, I've been gentle with them, trying to hand-feed, holding them close when they were young, all the stuff that gets the other breeds used to me. But these poor little chickens live in a horror movie, I think.

Maybe I just got a skittish batch.
