Trader Joes & Other Grocery Store Egg Hatching Club - Are you a Member

I am curious as to what breeds hatch from the TJ eggs.
The people who are able to buy them... What states are you in? I am in Oregon and they are not available.

I've heard both Leghorns and Austra-whites (a Leghorn mix I think). I'm in Northern California (Sacramento Valley area). The one I've hatched looked like a leghorn with a few black streaks/spots- I have 11 more developing at day 15 so we'll see what these look like.

I may go to Trader Joes tomorroww. What should I look for....the freshest fertile eggs or is there a cutoff date for what might hatch? Thanks for any advice.
Try and find the freshest eggs (check the back of the stack) and check for cracks or porus eggs. There will be a 3 digit number on the carton (the Julian Date - todays date is 312) so look for the newest ones. Fertility is usually fine for the first 10 day - hatch rates will start to drop after that. (Remember that for every day old the egg is you should figure 1 extra hour before the "expected" hatch time.) And make sure the carton is marked "Fertile".

Good luck!

And it doesn't hurt to ask if they have anything fresher in the back!

Trader Joe's sells A LOT of eggs, so they have production hens....usually a leghorn derivative because they lay lots off white eggs. You might get White Leghorn, Austra White, California White. I don't know if anybody has hatched out a California Gray. But being as how the Fertile Eggs they sell are white, expect a yellow chick/white offspring.
