being put in a refrigerator effects fertility , as does age but several people here have hatched eggs bought at places like trader joes , whole foods , sprouts ect , All you have to do is looke at places like that or small farmers markets or health food or organic markets and find cartons that say Fertle on them get them home let them warm up to room temp pop them in the bator and viola if your lucky you get babies

So I have never heard of people hatching eggs from the store. I'm a little confused because if the eggs are cooled doesn't that
stop them from being fertile or do those stores not cool them?

Egg biology is interesting in the fact that embryonic development is 'suspended' until they are heated up to a certain temperature. This is how a hen, who only lays one egg a day, gets an entire clutch of chicks to hatch at the same time. They don't start growing until she sits on them and heats them up.

SO, being kept at cool temps isn't as damaging to eggs as it is to mammilian embryos. Sure refrigeration isn't ideal, but as long as they don't freeze, they're not too badly affected. Age before 'activation' is more damaging actually.

I'm trying Round 2 tonight. I bought 2 dozen more marked 248 on the carton today from TJ's. The first batch I bought didn't have the date stamped on each egg, and I didn't know how to check for the fertile spot. I did recheck the original carton and it did say "fertile" on the top. I let these ones sit out for several hours, cracked two to check for fertility, then set the 22 in the hovabator. My first set were entirely clears at 12-14 days.

We'll see how it goes.

I think I joined back in the spring when I first got chickens, but I haven't been to anything yet. That's the group that does coop tours and things like that, right?

Hey guys! I found free range eggs at Sam's club the other day so I purchased them and through them into the incubator last night. I hadn't ever seen eggs marked free range before and I have never seen eggs marked fertile, but I thought I'd give them a go because I would love to hatch some grocery store chicks.

Has anyone been sucessful with hatching eggs simply marked "free range". They are from Great Day Farms.

Someone else told me that they have hatched Eggland's Best eggs and I just found out HyVee carries them, so I think I try them when I get the oppurtunity. Any thoughts?

Would it be a good idea to open a couple before you put them all in the incubator? You could check for the fertile spot.

I thought about that, but there are only 12 of them and with my luck, I would end up opening the only fertile one of the whole dozen. So I threw them all in and figured I'll know by Christmas.

Many companies today have websites or email addresses on the egg cartons. Or you can just google the egg farms name. That's how I found out that 2 sets of "free range" eggs, (chicken and duck) were not fertile. I just emailed them and asked.

Of course I had to explain to both of them that "Yes, you can hatch eggs from the store, if they are fertile" It took some convincing.
