Trader Joes & Other Grocery Store Egg Hatching Club - Are you a Member

ooh, I looked there last night, in the regular egg section. Didn't find anything. I wonder if they had another fridge in the organic section
Yes, check there. Here in Woodland, one of our stores has eggs in both the regular section and the organic section. Sadly, they do not carry fertile eggs there at my local store. It is a Bel Air store and it part of the Raley's food chain.

We saw some organic cage free brown eggs at the store and I looked all over the carton and it did not say if they were fertile or not.
DH wants to get some and put them under a broody hen to see if they are fertile.

Can someone tell me how to read on the carton how old the eggs are? They say they are good till feb 12, 2016.

look for the julian date. Today would be 28. It is easy now because we are in January. Later in the year you can use an online converter to figure out the date.

It is the date packed so it will be close to the day laid.

It'll be a 3-digit number, so today is 028. There might be another multi-digit number with a letter in front of it which designates which packing plant. But the 3-digit number is the one you're looking for for packing date.

:woot

A source of fertile eggs on the East Coast!

Get the word out! Post a picture of the egg carton. Find out where the egg farm is.

Good Job!

It looks like the farms are in PA. So pretty close by for me!

This box shows the Julian date as 329. The pic was taken Dec 17.,so the eggs in this box were pretty old

Thanks for the picture!

The sell by date and the julian date show why you need to go by the Julian date to find the freshest eggs.

The eggs I hatched on NYD were odd too. The sell by date for the Trader Joes were Dec 31 and the Julian date was 336. The eggs from Whole foods were sell by Jan 06 with a Julian date of 341.

The Whole Foods eggs were 5 days from packing when I bought them.
