Trader Joes & Other Grocery Store Egg Hatching Club - Are you a Member

yeah I was thinking I would get some here in a few weeks after my bator is empty and crack one open and check for the bullseye-I figured if they are free range for Amish and Mennonites they would probably have a chance to be fertile. Madcap did you get yours at Whole Foods?

This thread makes me laugh... but at my next incubation, if I don't have enough of my own eggs to fill the bator, I'll be running over to Safeways or TraderJoes.

Mahonri, if/when you do that, let me/us know because I want to try some, too. And it would be funner... err, more fun! to synchronize with somebody else.

I'm just trying to decide if I want to do it with 7 or just 3 eggs (Mini Advance versus an R-Com 'bator).

OK! No 'bator here but next spring when I have a broody, I'M GONNA TRY THIS!

what fun!

I have a broody hen but no rooster. She constantly lays on the eggs that she and others have laid and I felt so bad taking the eggs from her. Discovered everyone's idea of buying fertilized chicken eggs at the grocery store, and after much calling around found them at Whole Foods in Bellevue,WA. Their Redmond store did not carry them, nor our local Trader Joes in Kirkland, WA. Their sell by date is Oct 4, so hopefully they aren't too old. When my little boys get home from school today we will place them under the broody hen together. We'll see what happens!

You could check for the pack date on the carton. It should be a three digit number. The number represents the "Julian date" and should represent the day they were laid. Today 10 Sep 10 is 254 (out of 365 days in a non-leap year). That way you can see how old they are.

Thanks! Okay, so they look to be August 25th.... so 16 days old. I think I read someone else on this thread had some success with 16 day old eggs. Worth a shot for $3 I suppose....

Nope..........I got them at the little Mennonite store where I go to get my pasteurized-but-not-homogenized-whole-milk-with-heavy-cream-at-the-top!

I now go past the store a mile and get them at the source!
