Training my dogs...

What are some things you people have done to train your dogs to protect the flock? I have a German Shepard dog and an Australian Cattle dog. Thank you in advance!!!

Protect? First you have to teach not to harm them, chase them, or otherwise get their excitement levels up... excitement = attacks.

The dogs have never been concerned with birds. I live on 5 acres in southern California and have a large covey of quail come through quite often. The dogs pay them no mind. Mice and lizards on the other hand...
