I bought some 8 week old chicks a little over a week ago from a local poultry dealer. I was concerned when I watched the hired help grab them from their container and put them in mine. He would grab 3 or 4 in a handful and drop them in my container. Some he had by one leg and one by a wing tip. The chicks were scared and so was I. I didn't say anything since I wasn't sure what he would do if I did. When I got home and had them in their coop I was not surprised that they would have a fit if I even got close to their coop. If I opened the door they would all run to the farthest corner and pile up. I was afraid they would do harm to themselves. I have been feeding them treats several times a day and they will let me now open the door and not go crazy.
I decided today I should call the owner and tell him he should train his help in how to handle chicks. Still waiting for him to call back.
I expect I am not the only one that has had this experience. If I hadn't seem how they were handled I would just have assumed that these were wierd chickens.

Good for you...I'd do the same. No, let me rethink that. If it had been me, right then and there when that knucklehead was mishandling those chicks I would have said: "Okay, then! Now you leave those chicks that are in the box IN the box, and you will now get more X-numbers of new chicks from the stock and handle each one GENTLY...got it?"

You could tell him you want a call back with an apology and a promise to train his staff in manners and humane handling or else you will passing on the name and location of his store to the Backyard Chicken forum.
