Transporting chickens

I've never owned chickens.
Since I don't want that many, I'm going to buy pullets from someone local to me instead of online. What is the best way to transport them? I'd be using my pickup. Can I use one of the dog carriers? Should they be in the bed of the truck or inside? It would be about an hour long trip. If they need to be inside, what can I do to help them remain quiet? Maybe a blanket to make things dark?

Definitely make things dark. They'll be much calmer. However, they still need cool fresh air. If you can accomplish that they'll be fine. If it isn't too hot, they'll be ok in the back. If it's hot they may appreciate some AC.

This time of year it can be 100 so I think I'll put them inside.

I really appreciate this forum. Or maybe it's my future chickens who ultimately appreciate this forum, lol!.

Another question: The coop is connected to a run that's safe from predators. Should I lock them in the coop for a few days or can I let them out in the run (and they'll find the coop at night).
It's hot out so I'm not sure what would be better for them.
