Trapped a Neighbor's Dog on My Deck....Got an Earful

Pics
If all else fails, or if you feel the dog is taking food off your family's table, or believe it to be a threat, I'd shoot it too, but as a LAST resort, and very quietly.

I see you added to your above post after I quoted you. Quietly is the shutup part of the SSS everyone is always talking about. Who said anyone was going to make a big show of shooting the dog? Not I. I don't want to shoot him at all and have taken steps to avoid that, but men who threaten other people and property with guns when they are completely in the wrong in the first place are just not too bright, IMO. Unfortunately, both father and son could find themselves behind bars for that.

Oh, Boyd, my DH says, Just what I need- a squirrel that shoots back.

Could other family members in the house or relatives in the area intercede on your behalf? I would be thinking a private conversation and swearing to keep it between yourselves because you and your husband are in "fear for your lives."

I guess I'm saying who else in your community -- a pastor, a fellow Lodge member, a senior center employee, etc. -- knows this guy (the Dad) and might give you a sympathetic ear and offer to help?

Too bad you can't talk to the mother in Colorado. With what you're going through, I'd be Googling her name about now... Maybe send a snail-mail letter?

I realize these approaches might just bring the kettle to a boil instead of turning off the heat. Just wracking my brain trying to come up with ideas.

Why would they want to talk to the parent ? The kid is 20 and a adult. I do not get what is wrong with this younger generation nowdays. So rude and expect things to be handed to them. In most cases , although some kids nowdays are brought up right. (Good job parents ) . I am with you on people who do not care for their dogs. I have a friend who has (had) chickens , geese and ducks. She got a pit bull which killed all of them. Not all at once but she just did not use precaustion and the dog is out of control. Which is not good. My daughter told her to get the dog in training ASAP. Nothing gets me worse then people saying oh my dog is so out of control. They are the ones who are the reason they are out of control. Either be a good dog parent or do not get dogs. I saw other day dogs running loose killing a nieghbors chickens on their property. Just crazy.
So sorry you had to deal with that. You did the right thing making a police report.

I don't let them roam, but once in a while they do escape. Never got farther than my neighbor's. I love my dogs deeply. They are part of my family. Killing a man's dog is serious offense, and I would be looking to pay you back. I'm not playing either, its funny to say throw a rock or shoot it, but if someone hurt my dogs on purpose I'd be coming for him. I know everyone on the internet is a tough guy, but there are real bad people out here.
I say you get yourself a pellet gun, or a BB gun, and shoot him in the ass a few times. He'll get the idea and no permanent harm done. It's also somewhat satisfying. You could live trap it and call animal control. He'll have to pay to get it back, and he'll be ticked off. It also makes a record of problems. You can even hit him in the head with a shovel, but if you were to kill a dog, in almost every state, even with your car, you have to report it. Then, if you shot it, you're gonna have big time problems with cops, if you poisoned it or trapped it, your gonna have big time issues with the government agency that handles fish and game. Around here you would be a pariah for killing a pet dog, you would have serious legal issues that will cost a fortune, and you'll have to deal with the owner. Not only that but the rest of us backyard farmers will be labeled dog killers. Not good for business. Just my humble opinion.

As a responsible poultry enthusiast, I always free range with an eye to retiring `bad owner's' proxy agents of trespass and destruction (regardless of how cute or friendly they might be under other circumstances).

If any person shall discover any dog or dogs in the act of killing, wounding or chasing sheep in any portion of this state, or shall discover any dog or dogs under such circumstances as to satisfactorily show that such dog or dogs has or have been recently engaged in killing or chasing sheep or other domestic animal or animals, such person is authorized to immediately pursue and kill such dog or dogs; provided, however, that such dog or dogs shall not be killed in any enclosure belonging to or being in lawful possession of the owner of such dog or dogs.

I don't know any relatives of these people. The mother has probably washed her hands of the son, which I'd say is why he's back here now. I'm hoping he is just all big talk; you know how people can be sometimes. I always keep my driveway gate closed unless I'm expecting someone so there won't be much opportunity for the dog to come inside again, not unless he digs under or climbs over.

Funny thing is that once, when the roosters were going nuts, we went out to find a pitbull puppy at the back fence. It seemed lost. On a hunch, I called down to these same people and the kid and some of his buddies were "recreating" and lost track of one of his friends' dogs, who wandered up here. They can't seem to keep an eye on any canines down there.

You guys need to chill out. I have a coop full of expensive game birds out back, I'm not talking about standing there letting some idiot's dog eat them. That's my family's food. All I'm saying is that talking about killing peoples' pets right away, when there are other options, will bring all kinds of trouble IMO. You folks do what you think is right for you. What if your pet chickens wandered over and commenced to eating my vegetables. Maybe I should blast your chickens into the afterlife for eating my tomatoes. Taking food off my family's table. Maybe I figure they have germs that will wipe out hundreds of dollars worth of my pheasant. I should shoot them on the spot. Hell, I'll bet a pet chicken tastes as good as the one I had for dinner. Whatever you decide, good luck. Peace.

You've said this twice but I don't really understand what you mean by it. If my dog were running loose (and I assure you, something would be VERY wrong if that were to happen) I'd appreciate one courtesy call to let me know. After that, I'd expect a neighbor to SSS. Surely, that's not what you mean by 'bad folks', is it?

Chill out? No one is "un-chilled" here.

We are just discussing the situation. If my birds got out and wandered down the hill, then if the dog gets one there, they are not to blame, nor is the dog. That is why I have a perimeter fence, to keep dog from meeting up with chicken, on anyone's property, theirs or mine.

I, too, am not quite sure about the "bad folks" comment.

As in, they're going to burn down my coops if I kill their dog? Um, yeah, there are. That doesn't change my course of action in protecting my flock, though.
