Trapping a Raccoon - Baiting / Setting The Trap

When I was trying to catch some coons (caught like 9 skunks instead..but that's another story).

I spoke to some trappers. They suggested marshmellows with a little vanilla. Apperently coons LOVE vanilla and the lack of meat keeps the cats from investigating.

I always tie my bait to the trap so they have to work at it. This ensures that they walk ON the treddle.

Trap smart coons know how to get the bait without stepping on the treddle, so making them work for it can help. I like the idea of putting the bait UNDER the trap and placing some rocks there for the coon to "dig" through...no way to do that and miss the treddle!

Good Luck

We had a sneaky (little) coon that kept tripping the trap on the way out. We finally wired the food in a mesh sack so he really had to work to get it out and tripped the door in his efforts. 5 coons since our last chicken massacre in May.
