Trapping weasel help, please!*IT CAME BACK!**

Quote:
I can't seem to trap anything without a freshly killed hen to bait the trap. They just walk around it and head for the tractors. It's the most frustrating thing.

Fortunately, the ground here froze last night so we they can't dig under the tractors. I figure I have less than a week to get rid of these things.

Thanks everyone for the info on minks vs weasels. I thought the ears looked wrong. DH even suggested that someone was missing a pet ferret.

The youngsters kill differently than the older ones the one I had was an old buck so the trapper said this is how we caught him:

We took a square trash can liner placed a board in front held on with clamps; (you need to be able to get in) cut a hole in the board thats the same as a canbear trap, it looks like 2 squares when folded together, then placed a young chick in the box surrounded by very heavy wire mesh so the varment could here the chick but not get it. placed it by were the mink was going it took 2 days but we got him. also you need to place the trap, we think it took 2 days because the trapper set the trap the first day and the mink could tell it was a different person? when I set the trap thats when he went in.

The chick we used became a pet.

The mink that we trapped died sometime last night. No idea why. It certainly had plenty to eat given that we used the hen that it killed two nights ago as bait. Plenty of room in the trap. No injuries. Looks like it just gave up, lay down and died.

So we reset the trap and hope to catch the other one that we know for certain is out there.

Redhen - any luck on trapping your weasel?

I'm very sorry, but the picture of you scurrying around the house, nightgown, boots and a coat flying in the breeze is very funny.

However your loss is not...I hope you can solve the problem soon.

I am glad you have a humane trap

wild animals have equal rights to life as our chickens do. I think it is really cruel that people think they have the right to kill a wild animal for attacking chickens.

SECURE your outdoor coops and bring your loved favorite chickens INDOORS and let them out under supervision.

There are many solutions to problems, there really are never problems only solutions!
