Treat or Don’t Treat?

For pet birds, do you treat when disease and illness arise? Or do you put down, and don’t treat?

What I meant by pet bird is one that is your favorite that you spend time with. My pet birds (pheasants and turkeys) are in aviary’s but come out to play and spend time with the family. My birds are potty trained so they use a dog door during the day when they want to say hi or want attention. From time to time I have wild birds being rehabilitated “these are not pets”, and see people as little as possible to aide in their release. Breeders can go both ways depending on the bird.
Ah OK so you did mean pet poultry not cage birds like parrots!

There’s a tag at the top that says “other poultry” so it could go either way. I think of Pet Birds as caged birds..:
My chickens are pets. They follow me around whenever I am in their fenced enclosure much like a dog. They come running when I 'coo' to them and will let me pick them up. Unfortunately a mink got into their coop and killed all 8 of them including my favorite easter egg layer who was 7 years old and still laying. Don't know if I will own anymore. Hurts too much to lose them.

Oh so sorry to hear about your loss. Don’t let this keep you from owning chickens again, because they make great pets, good companions, and having them around is very soothing & therapeutic.

Depends on the pet and the illness. I have button quail- will try to help, but not gonna spend a lot of energy or money on it. My chickens, now, are different. I have a cross beak I feed special blend by herself every morning. I have to close her in the pullet pen so she can eat in peace. The others want her food will push her away from it. Other than that, superficial illnesses and wounds get treated, severe stuff- euthanize. I did have one little chick euthanized- still sorry for it, but necessary. My dogs will get treatment as long as it doesn't break the bank. I have one with allergies the vet wanted to give med for at $50 a month. I just go to the dollar store and get allergy pills and half them for about $5. As for the husband, while he was here, he got top of the line treatment all the way to the end.
