I had a hen given to me. I know nothing about her other than shes a hen of laying age. Shes not laid while ive had her and thats just been 2 weeks.
Symptoms are:
Coughing, sneezing, shaking head and flinging food. Some times she will have bubbles in one eye but its not constant. Once i found she had a dried up bloody mucous from her nostril on the same side the bubbly eye is. I washed that away and shes not had it again. It seems like when she eats her feed (crumbles) shes got mucous in ther throat and it makes it look like the food is just packing in her mouth and thats when she flings her head.
Treatment:
What ive done is crated her away from the other hens. Ive been giving her tetracycline in her water. I wasnt seeing any improvement and i dont have access to any other medications until the weekend. So i dug through my medicine cabinet and gave her a tiny bit of an antibiotic i had given to me for a strain of antibiotic resistant strep. As soon as i think shes getting better shes sneezing again.
Her head and waddles and comb look fine but it looks like the nostril on that one side that drains and the side of the bubbly wye, looks a little inflamed. Her beak also looks blueish, top amd bottom at the base moving down towards the tip.
What could this be?
Should i keep up with the antibiotics?
Does she need an eye drop?
Tylan 50? I only have access to the huge bottle of tylan 500. They dont sell the 50 at the two tractor supply stores near me or the Stricklands.
Should i just cull?
