Sadly Baxter's comb has gotten frostbitten. How do I treat it and what will happen when/as it heals? Will the damaged points fall off or will the skin peel off to reveal new skin?

Thanks y'all!
Laura

Unfortunately, whatever part of the comb is frostbitten, is dead tissue and will most likely fall off in time.. You can use triple antibiotic ointment on it to keep away a secondary infection until this happens.. It can take days or weeks for the dead tissue to dry up and fall off though.. You can also cut off the dark area carefully with a sharp sterile knife or scissors. Treat the cut by putting antibiotic cream and a sterile dressing over it. Continue to treat the area with antibiotic cream and a dressing until the cut has healed..

Sorry about Baxter frostbite, but GreenGoddess is right, there is nothing to do for it. We deal with frostbite a lot here in northern Ohio. I have had a heat lamp in their coop running for over a month now to help with this problem.

Thanks to both of you! Frostbite not really a problem we have often, or even should have in Texas! lol! Poor Baxter. He had such a lovely comb.
