Treating scaly leg mite in the winter?

Hello,
I think my chickens have scaly leg mites. I see the more common treatment is to apply oil to the legs and feet. It is winter here, might that chill them too much to have oil wet legs?? What should I do?

you can use vaseline ( Petroleum Jelly )as well on their legs
