I recently noticed that a couple of my quail have what appears to be scaly leg mites. Since these are supposed to be contagious, I've been treating all my birds as a precaution by coating their legs in vegetable/coconut oil every other day and adding food-grade diatomaceous earth to the coop. My question is, how will I be able to tell when the mites are gone? Everything I've read says that their leg scales will continue to look untidy until their next molt. My birds are in the middle of a molt right now, so can I expect their legs to go back to normal during this molt cycle or will they continue to look scaly until next molt?

can you post pics? what type of quail?
They are coturnix. This hen seems to be the most badly affected. The leg scales are slightly raised and look grey/dirty underneath.

Since I can't actually see the mites and she already looks a mess due to the molt, how can I tell when I've gotten rid of them?
