Treating Sour Crop: Neochlore or Neomycin

I would do the ACV and the grit! Give food, maybe more mashed up or soaked in water or mineral oil. The crop will feel full then they eat but should empty out as they digest it. The ACV should neutralize the crop, the mineral or olive oil will lubricate it and the grit will help CHEW the food.

This can't be treated with an antibiotic. The ACV should take care of the crop and the regulate the PH in there. My chicks were young when I treated them and I did withhold the food, but noone told me not to. When they eat the crop will fill up and then it should empty as the crop grinds up the food. With the yogurt and egg they don't need the grit. And they don't need the grit with their chick starter. Grit is only given if they are eating grass and other types of treats that their crops can't grind up. When they are young they will eat the grit thinking it is food and as they get older their bodies know when they need the extra grit and when they don't. This was explained to me by my vet. And when I took the chick to the vet that had the sour crop she is the one that told me to do the ACV and water and withhold food to get the crop to neutralize it. (I only took one because only one started out with it) I also talked with Speckledhen and she was who told me to use the yogurt and then the scrambled egg and it worked it just took time and patience.

I know it it hard to not give food to them but this is what has to be done to get the crop to function properly.

Sour Crop Treatments that have been Recommended by BYCers

Powdered copper sulfate - has anti-fungal properties. Dosage is 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water, changed daily for several days. This will also inhibit the growth of certain types of bacteria, an added benefit.

Suction - in severe cases of sour crop, connect a soft catheder tube to a needless syringe. The catheter must be inserted down the throat and into the crop. This is uncomfortable for the chicken and you may give her a drop or two of Bach's Rescue Remedy to help calm her for this process. Once the catheter is in the crop, carefully pull the plunger of the syringe to suck liquid from the crop.

There is also a way to get a chicken to vomit the soft crop contents, but I can't find my link for this at the moment. I will dig around some more and see if I can find it. The problem with this method is ensuring they do not aspirate (accidentally breath in the vomit) during the process.

I don't know right off, but I have sent a PM to the BYCer who recommended it asking where it can be obtained.

Here is more information you might find useful. I did not find anywhere on that site that mentioned where to get the powdered copper sulfate. Organic grocers such as Whole Foods may carry it. I will let you know if I find out anything more.

Speckledhen tells me you can get the powdered copper sulfate at the feed store. My apologies for several posts in a row, but I did want to ensure you saw this instead of simply adding as an edit.

I,ve been battleing sour crop for 3 or 4 weeks now and i finally see headway. made her throw up a few times but she hated it and would get mad. Its kinda risky cause they can get it in their lungs. Any way i feed her scrambled eggs squished up very small. really mashed up elbo macroni, and her fav is well cooked instant rice (Uncle bens) and some yogert (Activia) she got tired of that quickly, apple sauce, also olive oil in a dropper and massage gently. I let her watch me cook eggs and rice (i held her) that made her get excited cause she could smell it cooking .It was funny, B T W she is a standered Black Ameraucana. As of the 1st of June she actually has real live chicken poop now before not much but white uria liquid. Im still keeping her inside in a large dog cage and she goes out on nice days in a small yard pen covered with plastic for moisture and a black sheet for shade. Although she is pretty thin. she is in a good mood and pretty active. Her crop was huge when I discovered her ill, It stayed big a long time and is still kinda oversized. My vet said it sometimes cant go back to small size (normal)prob be a little bigger always. I'm going to continue to doctor her a while longer and add small amounts of her reg feed slowly
