Long story short, the mother came in contact with ticks just before whelping (its tick season here) and every product I could of used stated it was not safe for puppies under 7 weeks or nursing mums. Newborn (nearly a week old) pups now have some ticks and I'm picking them off everyday and washing bedding untill I can find a better alternative. Surely theres something that can be used on mum and bubs thats safe? Store brought or even homemade?

help please.

At this point you're doing everything you can by taking them off by hand. Unfortunately with the puppies being brand new, they're susceptible to a lot of the chemicals/parasite treatments on the market. You can get a flea comb (with no chemicals in it) and comb the puppies gently to remove them easier.

This is a question for your vet. I know no one wants to pay for a vet visit they don't have to, but newborns can become anemic scary quick. I have been recommended by my vet Capstar, and have used the generic on a nursing cat with good results. While it is expensive, there are generics and it took the nasties off mother and babies both. But definitely ask your vet before you treat - there's always newer, safer things coming out, and your area may have other products.

See if your vet says it is okay to rub the pups down with olive oil and then shampoo that out of them with either Dawn dish soap or some kind of mild puppy shampoo. Bathe mom real good too so no more ticks transfer from her to pups. I know oil will kill them, as i have a relative who is a nurse and when our kids were running together they got seed ticks and she stuck them in the tub and gave them Avon Skin So Soft (r) to rub down with. It's an oil but she said any oil will do.
