Quote:I'm back again....
Well healthy chickens for a time, but now the one that began symptoms is getting worse. She is lethargic and stands still and closes her eyes sometimes. She has a slight rattle to her and i have heard her sneeze along with a few others. Seems like many have poo that is caramel colored and runny!!! I think it's time for Tylan 50.
Confirming the dosage.... 1/2cc twice/day? Once/day? My birds are about 5 months old, no bantams, mainly rirs and EEs. Medicate 5 days? Shot in the neck or breast?

I have only used Tylan once and that was one time for one day on one bird. She was a small hen, about 1000 grams and I gave her .8ml. According to the chart in my previous post, your pullets are probably closer to 3 pounds (1.36kg), so a little more than mine weighed. I have not used Tylan enough to recommend dose.

thank you. I already gave the hen 1/2cc in the back of the neck. She was too wiggly for the breast. I will continue through Friday

Hi,
1/2cc is good. Give that dosage twice daily. The tylan has an effective window of about 10 to 12 hours so repeating the injection twice daily is very important. When treatment is over-3 to 5 days, give some probios or natural yogurt to replace good bacteria. Also, scrambling some eggs up, or mooshed up boiled eggs, offered daily will help boost crucial nutrition while treating with tylan.

Best wishes

I seem to have a happy hen again, she is not lethargic anymore. She is eating and drinking, however, I was trying to think of what I could add to her diet to help her put on weight? I did feed yogurt and eggs. Anything else? I tried giving my hens cabbage, they would not touch it.

Cabbage lol. Mine won't touch it either! Well, I know that millet seed(like in bird seed) puts weight on my sons pigeons, also black oil sunflower. We feed ours some cotton seed from the local feed store when they need a boost. Sounds good that your hen is heading in the right direction. Always check for external parasites too and use some DE on her. When chickens don't feel good, they may not dustbathe or preen their feathers, and mites etc can take over quickly causing anemia.

I would continue to boil up some eggs and feed her at least one meal of those a day as well as her regual feed, and whole oats are good too. Hopefully she will put some weight on in the next week or so.

Glad she is better...

You could try feeding her something with more protein, like Purina Flock Raiser, or maybe some turkey or gamebird starter. If you do that, make sure she has access to free choice oyster shell. Eggs, crickets and mealworms are also good. She doesn't need yogurt, but if you want to give her probiotics, buy one formulated for birds.

Thank you both. I have been giving the flock added vitamins and probiotics with ACV in their water. I gave them all a dust bath with DE and seven dust on Tuesday, they all seem happier now! I will buy black sunflower seed and meal worms.

Sunflower seeds in moderation. High fat content and excess shells could cause more harm than good.

Sunflower seeds are not all that high in protein, compared to feeding a flock raiser feed which is 20%. As Casportpony said, too that too much may be harmful. I lost a hen this year whose gizzard was impacted with sunflower shells. Eggs, dry cat food, tuna, and meat can boost protein, but treating them with gamebird feed at 24% and higher can bump up your normal feed at less cost.

That is coughing you hear. Many new diseases have appeared for birds recently - this is one of them.
If the coughing is painful, I mean, they cry after each cough, then it Might be too late.
I searched the Net alot - I gathered this is a virus - not bacteria. A very noble professor suggests "vitamin C stops Any virus known to man," so I gave mine some.
Another highly qualified person suggested feeding them (very) small bits of soap - yes soap!
I checked with many pharmacists and they all agreed with this. So, I fed mine small bits of soap (not mixed in their water - embedded it in the food they like), aboundant vitamin C, and asprin in their water (increases No. of white blood cells).
I saved all of mine this way.
Best of luck

What are the names of these "new diseases"?
