What can be done to help aid the recovery of a hen sick with mites (in addition to killing mites?)

Discovered one of our hens has a bad case of black mites. She’s obviously not feeling well, her comb is pale and she seems lethargic and anemic. We’ve already cleaned out coop, bought the ultra care brand mite and lice spray to spray her with, and will treat the rest of our flock as well. Our affected hen is about 4 years old.

I’m worried about her condition and I’m wondering what else can be done to help aid her recovery? Any supplements I can give her to make her feel better? What helps an anemic hen?

thanks!

Hi, there, sorry to hear about your hen, and sorry no one has been able to respond sooner.

How is she doing? Do you have any pictures of her? Have you checked her again for mites? Can you take her to a vet?

Besides some sort of blood transfusion performed by a vet, I'm unsure of any way you can combat the suspected anemia besides providing overall supportive care, which sounds like what you'll need to do.

Just checking, is this the brand you're using on her?

You've made a good start with separating her from the flock. The last thing she needs is to be getting bullied, and shamed away from feed, and water. Make sure her pen inside, is warm, stressful free, and quite. I would try offering her warm soupy feed occasionally, as well as mashed scrambled eggs for some protein. To get her hydrated, you can drip a few drops of a poultry vitamin, or Gatorade along her beak, or add an electrolyte to her water. I may also start weighing her on a food scale daily, to see if tube feeding will be needed. Birds can lose a surprisingly large amount of blood and recover, so I think with a little TLC she'll be on her way to recovery.
