I posted a separate thread a few days ago about my sapphire gem with vent gleet/prolapse. As this was my first issue with this I found many people with similar issues suggesting to use Monistat (both orally & topically). However, it was brought to my attention, and I found many articles that Monistat should NOT be used on an animal that will be used as a food source (meat or eggs). I have not read said articles yet, but I did find many in an internet search. I just wanted to put that out there so I did not disseminate bad info to anyone that suffers the same issues.
The acceptable treatment would be Nystatin which I think requires a prescription.

My girl is not back to normal yet, and I’m not sure what I’ll do if I can get her healed. As there’s probably no way I can be certain I can discern her egg from all my other hens. 😔

But if there’s any well seasoned chicken tenders that know about this I’d be very thankful for you to drop your knowledge on me.

We had a hen that prolapsed on her first egg. We tried everything over the 8 days it took for her to keep everything back inside. The only thing that I found to help the swelling go down was raw honey. It really was a miracle. I also rubbed around her vent with an ice cube after gently pushing everything back in for a few seconds, then would give a rest for 60 seconds, and repeat. This forced the pucker effect and helped her resist the urge to push. I hope this helps and I encourage you not to give up on her! It can take some time, but is worth the fight and she went on to be totally normal after that. Praying for healing!

I had some people oh a FB thread say a paste made with sugar and a few say raw honey…
Forgive my ignorance, but I don’t know the difference between raw honey and the honey I get from the ‘little bears’ in the grocery store.

I’ll try anything to fix the gloppy mess that’s happening on her backside.
But now I’m in a quandary about the whole ‘Monistat is a teratogen’ issue. And can I still keep her and use her eggs if I can get her healthy?
I’ll search for some raw honey though for sure!

I have a duck that’s been dealing with vent gleat for 4 months
We have been running the vets well over 15 times including avian vets
Over 3000 now in vet bills
4 antibiotics for bacterials infections or elevated bacteria found in her poo and gleat samples
Finally they tested the fungal in the gleat and she has aspergillosis not in the lungs though
She just started fungal meds last Thursday and will need them for 60 -90 days.
I have been throwing her eggs away since the start and when I had her with the flock at night I was throwing away 11 eggs a day
Now I have her inside at night and let her out in the morning after she lays so I’m not loosing all the eggs
She isn’t contagious but her eggs shouldn’t be eaten
I have used canesten and monistat creams along with iodine to clean and silver spray
Also oral silver before the fungal meds came in
I would suggest maybe at night keep her in a crate or a blocked off area in the coop where she can lay the egg and you aren’t having to throw away all eggs not knowing what one is hers

I just read your post to my husband…
He’s about to ‘take her to the train station.’

My husband is about to take me to the train Stratton 😂
These meds she is on just cost 272.00 for one month
I’m not done with vet bills either
As she will need more testing at 30 days and the avian vet wants to recheck her very soon
This is what she was put on

I just went out to check on my girl. She jumped right over to me. I put feed down for her. She is eating like she’s ravenous. She is pooping. She’s pushed her proposed back out. She smells to high heaven, and her butt looks like it’s covered in foam, dripping down to the floor.
It’s not getting better. Is seems to be getting worse. And honestly, if I can’t put her with her flock and I can’t eat her eggs, I’m beginning to think the train station might be the best place for her. Living in a dog crate in the garage with a drippy foamy butt is no place for a chicken. 🥺

Don't give up on her! The raw honey is the only thing that made a difference for us. It is the best antifungal and antibiotic cream around. There's a reason that it never spoils. Raw honey is not processed in any way and is the only honey we buy. You can get it from farm stands and roadside stands. I would soak her bum and clean her up as best as possible before slathering her bum, then gently put everything back inside. I have spent far more time with fingers inside a chicken than I ever thought I would but it works!

I get what you are saying
I only keep my girl in at night but she is in a big bedroom in the basement along with her mom as mom is on break from the boys
But I don’t have leaking foam stuff
I have just gleat build up in the urethra that the vet was clearing out every 4 days but she taught me how and now I’m doing it myself
