How many days should I make grit available before letting my 3 1/2 week old BO's have treats?

There will be no way to confirm they are all eating grit.
Does this matter?

What happens if a bird gets a grape or strawberry and hasn't had grit first?
What is the best type of container to put grit into?
Can it be raised off the floor or does it need to be ground level?

I used parakeet grit for my chicks and just put it in a pie pan. Now early on they learned that the pie pan meant something new to eat and there was never any doubt that they were getting grit because it would be a mod scene at the pan as soon as I got it into their pen. At 3 to 4 weeks I started taking my chicks outside to a pen so that they could do the chicken thing. It usually consisted of eating gravel and grass. They seem to know what they want.
