Treats for baby chicks

Hi! I’m looking to give my baby chicks some treats, they’re about four weeks old. They’re being raised in the brooder inside so they haven’t gotten any grit yet, we’re waiting till about 8 weeks. Until then, is there anything they can have that they won’t need grit for? Thanks!

Why not give them grit? Baby chicks raised by broody hens will be picking up grit at just a few days old. Chick grit is ground up to a size appropriate for chicks and can be found where the chick starter is.

Chicks will usually not pick up anything larger than their esophagus will handle. Grit will assist in digestion, and is an insurance policy against constipation from eating too much. Live meal worms, (dried are hard to digest), a lettuce leaf, a half an apple to peck at, raw squash to peck at, are among popular chick treats.

Your chicks can also start spending some time each day outdoors to ready them for living in a coop. Most chicks, unless the weather is extremely cold, below freezing, are able to move into their coop at age five weeks.

Agree that they should have chick grit.

Watermelon and berries are good treats, but use the watermelon sparingly, otherwise there will be a watery chicken poop explosion, lol

My favorite treat for my chickens, starting at age two weeks, was their food wetted into a mash. I put it in the palm of my hand, and it felt like getting tapped with half a dozen dull pencils. Fun for them and for me.

I still give my year old chickens their food wetted as a mash, in a pie plate. They still come running for it. Don't they know it's the same thing as what's in the bowl over there? Silly chickens.

My chicks loved:
Dough- wet chick crumb
Mushed sweetcorn
Mushed peas

Or combine them to make a pizza!
