Treats that are high in protein?

Do they eat the black oiled sunflower seeds whole? I've seen birds crack open the seed and get to the meat, but when I've bought sunflower seeds without the shell for the backyard birdfeeders, the birds don't want it. So what do my chickens want? Shells or no shells -- I saw both at the feed store.

Mealworms.
High quality cat food (preferably not the crud they sell in the grocery store) but not too much because of salt content.
Eggs.
Some folks say their birds like cottage cheese.
Once a week or so I offer high quality grain bread with olive oil poured on (I cut everything up in little bits)
Every bird I've ever cared for has loved black oil sunflower seeds still in their shells.

Mine didn't like BOSS either. I was so mad! Well, not really, but I spent money on this enormous bag because people told me they would love it. They wouldn't even touch it...that is until I gave them some by hand. Then they knew it was food. It only took that one time giving it to them from my hand and they went nuts for it! They LOVE it now. Maybe you could try that.
