Tree sap gathering and syrup making

Thanks. Both trees are out in the open, unshaded.

Days have been in the low 20s overnight. Yesterday was in the 40s and sunny, today in the high 30s with a high haze. Same production both days.

Some minor differences in the tapping process (first timer) but both trees are doing the same.

Ground water seems the most likely. This winter has been very dry.

I just tappedmy first 3 trees yesterday. Have almost 5 gallons of sap already. Has anyone tried freezing sap to concentrate it first? I have a freezer with room for a bucket, but it gets down to -20.

Results of first boil, from 10 gal sap. Bit of a learning curve with this hobby, but tasty results.

I'm not sure maple syrup is the best option for this area (KS). The temps are now consistently above freezing at night and the maple trees are budding fully. I got about 3 gallons of sap from two trees.

I think I may look for walnut trees next spring and see if I have more success with those.

Thanks for sharing that information. It sounds delicious. A good quality maple syrup is expensive and choices are limited on the shelf. Testimonials are nice.

I've bought from them a few years ago and thought it was OK. Nothing amazing but OK. I decided to go online and buy more to use in my coffee. I saw that they were offering some new types, including this one. It seemed a bit expensive but they are a family owned and veteran business so I decided to splurge. I couldn't believe how yummy it was. I kinda wanna try their Apple Brandy syrup next... 😂
