HEY! I am planning on tapping walnut trees in the spring for the firsttime. I am gathering supply's for it this winter. Anyone have some tips or something extra you got that helped you a lot?
Thanks.

Keep us updated. I'm curious about your success.
Where in Missouri are you located?
I grew up on a farm in Madison County and we had a lot of Black Walnut trees on the property. I wish I had known about this possibility at the time.

I live about 45 minutes from Branson missouri. I'm not far from Galena. I will definitely keep y'all posted!😄

I am planning on tapping our trees for the first time this spring! We have 4 silver maples, I had no clue you could make syrup from them until last summer I heard a guy talking about it. Now I have to try it!

I never really thought about it before but apparently any species of maple can be tapped. It is just that sugar maple sap has the highest concentration of sugar.
You can also tap Black Walnut, Sycamore, Box elder, Birch, Hickory and Tulip Poplar. That means there are lots of trees in Missouri (and most of the country) that can produce syrup with enough work.
Trees need to be at least 10 inches in diameter. The larger, the more taps. It takes about 40 gallons of sugar maple sap to make a gallon of syrup. Other species take 60 gallons or more.
That's a lot of trees and a lot of taps. And a lot of boiling over an open fire.

I didn’t know you could tap walnut trees. 👀
I know right?! I only heard about tapping walnuts a few years ago! At the time, I live in ohio and we only had a few black walnut trees and they were only 12 foot or so tall. We just recently moved to Missouri. The new property has walnut trees that are 20 plus feet!! I have never seen walnut trees that big until we moved!
