Feisty. ..the cats out of the bag....the horse has left the barn....once a lapper, always a lapper! Yep, Big Bird has bonded to you. Sounds like she's becoming like Daisy, who fusses at me until I sit down & spend some time with her. Annie will do the same thing. Sat out there tonight & cracked some pecans for them. I had one turkey on each arm of my chair trying to help me get the nut pieces out.

Alex, you can always call your local extension office & ask about blackhead in your area. Royal Palm or Bronze....get both! You'll love turkeys. Totally different than chickens. We like to describe them as dogs with feathers. They can bond strongly with people. Next thing you know they are asleep in your lap!

Oldhen, beautiful pictures. We have some wonderful turkey photographers here. When they start asking for calendar submissions I'm going to start bugging ya'll!

Aurora, Sweet Pea & Pebbles have such great color. I'm looking forward to see what some of the babies look like grown. Hope they get some of that red!

Ralph, frozen eggs have got to be frustrating. Sorry about the baby not doing well. Interesting that you got a white. Does that mean you have at least two birds(mom & dad) with recessive white genes? Or can the bird express the recessive gene with just one parent having the gene?

It's my understanding that if you have blackhead it shows up pretty quickly. Right? Anybody know?

Hello, Memphis, from my experience moving my turkeys to a place with blackhead, the answer to your question about does it show up quickly would be, Yes. . . and No. I think if you put poults, young stock out on infested ground it would show up real quick probably as sudden death of poults. My adults though, were here for quite a while (a year) before one of them got sick, and he was the only one. I asked the vet, he said maybe that tom was the one who really really liked earthworms, maybe the others have developed more resistance by picking up lower doses more slowly, or maybe it was just that the year was so extremely wet and he was just the unlucky one.

If you had a series of relatively dry years, or your turkeys don't care for earthworms, you might never see it until you put poults out.
Thanks Poorfarm. Good info.

Aurora, Ralph.....where are our baby pictures?

Feedman, your hatch sounds like it's coming along great! Yippee! And I've had it with this weather. I know it's not as cold down here, but this cold snap is bumming me out. All my daffodils have buds. All I need is a few warm sunny days and they'll bloom.

Daisy FINALLY lost her ragged tail feathers! Poor girl is such a molting mess. Pins everywhere. She doesn't want me to even touch her. Annie, however, is starting to look beautiful! I couldn't help myself. Had to pick her up & get hen hugs. She snuggles her head in my jacket collar. Also picked up all my chickens. Just to check them out...they aren't as excited about hugs!
