Trimed beaks ??

Gracefulspice, I only see the picture of her head and part of the beak, but not the "offensive" part, is it my computer ?? I'd like to be able to see it better, anybody else have a pic of a trimmed beak?

Mr. Dad, thanks for the answer, I did find out, blah! Mine are going to have trimmed beaks, but there's always the option of traveling to a farm for another "normal" chicken. I'll love them anyway, it's not their fault people mess with them.

OH! I see the picture fine now. I'm going to say this to make myself feel better, Oh, it doesn't look too bad, does it? I have no choice since mine will look like that.

Lunachick...if you look at the top beak you can see how much shorter it is then the bottom. It should be ther other way around. Top longer bottom shorter. Her top beak was what was cut..pretty far back too. But like you said love-em anyways. It's not their fault. I still love my girls.

LOL...we must have been typing at the same time. You really won't notice it too often. And like you said...who cares. Love-em anyways

Hi Graceful! Does it bother her to peck at the ground? Does she act "normal"? Does she still do regular chickeny things? Please ease my mind, thank you!

It's also extremely painful to the birds to have this done--more like having the tips of your fingers cut off than having your nails trimmed. The debeaking they do to keep overcrowded birds from pecking each other out of stress is very different from the sort of trimming you might do to help a bird with a crossed beak.

I'd recommend googling the practice and making up your own mind, because we might be getting onto shaky territory for the board.

Lunachick,

When I posted that I had chickens with trimmed beaks, I stated that I would not recommend getting them.

However, that said, my chickens acted like chickens, led long, happy, & healthy lives.

They had a little difficulty pecking at things but survived quite well.

Enjoy your chickens...everything will be fine!

Rant on, Mr.Dad! There's a big difference between stock-keeping practices that are done to correct a problem and ones that are done for the convenience of humans.
One of my pet peeves is dairy cows with their tails docked. Happily, in Vermont this isn't seen too often, but I saw it everywhere when I took a trip to the Midwest a couple of years ago. It makes me ill to see a gorgeous cow with just a little stub. It makes me want to tie the owner's hands behind their back and make them stand out in the middle of a field full of cow patties and not have any way to whoosh away the flies!
