Triming/Removing a rooster's spurs...

Thank you to those who responded... I still haven't decided what to do yet... I am thinking of the potato idea, but I need to know:

Is there a danger in removing the outer layer rather than trimming it with a dremmel (sp?)? Say there was a danger of infection or something of the sort, if I applied Blu-Kote (a colored disinfectant) would that prevent infection??
Thanks for any more help!

Thank you for posting the videos of removing the spur shell or casing. It looked very easy and seems minimally painful to the roo. Our 3 year old roo has spurs that are about 3 inches and we found him one day bleeding and his spur shell missing. SO we need to do his other spur. THis information has given us confidence and comfort to do it and not injure our wonderful roo.
thanks again for the information.
