Trimming polish head feathers

pips&peeps :

I've heard it said that some people put their feathers in those small scrunchie type bands.

yeah we did that till one of the other chickens pulled it off and tried to eat it

Will they molt every year? Ive never had polish. This is the first year our layer have molted, they are 1.5, 3, 4 years old......they all look like horror movie chickens right now, with all their pin feathers

Here is what 1 of my bantam polish looks like (the wet-head ones) & my new polish roo...all the ones i see always look nicer, I'm hoping he wont end up all icky like my banty pair. The new guy is standard size.

My polish hens get their "ears lowered" every so often. When they are young is the worst. When they get older the roos form a nice v shaped comb that keeps the feathers out of their eyes. The hens generally are the ones that have the problem with seeing. I grap a head and the wife cuts feathers enough for them to see well. It is harmless and I do agree that the bird in question may be intentially wetting its head feathers, I have seen this too with big male silkies. I have one silkie that always looks like he has two black eyes. He gets into the wet dirt all the time and the soil is pretty black.

I have two polish and we are BRAND NEW to chickens. They are 8 weeks and in with 4 others chickens all different breeds. We have not had any issue with pecking but we are in a current state of crisis with out more beloved Golden Polish. Because we just finished our coop and put in overhead waterers she could not see them and the first day out she became very hurt or ill. She either flew up and hit her head on the ramp trying to get in (couldn't see) or she became dehydrated because she could see the waterer. My daughter found her having seizers in the bottom of the coop. The saddest thing I have ever witnessed. I won't go into detail about how bad that night was but she is still inside in a box next to my bed. I have to give her food and water (not doing anything on her own) and it has been almost two days and she's not strong enough to walk yet but she is making noise now. I was soooooo happy when she woke me up this morning with her baby chick noises.
Anyway, not to bring anyone down as we wanted to show her also but I think in order to keep her safe it's time to trim head feathers. Wish I would have found this link earlier. Thank you all for all the information.
Say a prayer for my baby "Denver"

I have a polish and I just today gave her her first haircut. One eye had a feather poking in it? And later this evening I’m going to trim up the other side of her head. She was getting around fine but it was obvious she had vision problems and upon further inspection, she maybe had a twenty to thirty degree field of vision, and only in one eye.

As pretty and sweet as she is, I myself probably won’t have any more polish babies in my flock.
