trimming spurs

How do you do it? I mean are they like a dog's toenails, I imagine they would have a quick? Checker, our barred cochin banty roo's spurs are so long that he trips on them when he walks, and they are also making him slightly lame, from rubbing. Can you use dog nail clippers, are those strong and big enough?
 
Yep just like trimming the nails on a dog.

On a light colored spur you can actually see the core on the inside and avoid it. I use the metal gillotine type of dog nail clippers for trimming. After trimming just round off the end with an emory board.
