(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We've had chickens for about 9 years, many different breeds. Our youngest daughter took a liking to them by the age of 5, so we got her started in 4-H showing poultry. We started off with just laying hens and expanded a little more each year.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 5 laying hens left from the fair (we like to keep a few over winter for eggs). As for the Phoenix, we currently have 22! Our older hen (who is our pet) is very broody and keeps hatching eggs.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Our laying hens consist of a Barred Rock, Blue cochin, Dark Brahma, and 2 Welsumer. So far we have 3 Phoenix cocks, 2 cockerals, 4 hens (1 is 7 yrs old), 1 pullet, and 12 chicks a week old.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I was lookking for a website to advertise our Phoenix birds for sale.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Our 3 daughters are very active in sports and school activities, so right now that's our hobby.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I have 3 daughters (18, 14, 12). we live on a small hobby farm where keep chickens, sheep and goats. The animals all belong to our girls for their fair projects. They all have been showing sheep for 10 years. We breed and raise all our own fair animals, which has given them many life lessons. Lambing time is always exciting. Middle daughter shows goats, which we also breed and raise kids, and youngest shows the chickens. We have a cowboy Corgi named Marty, who loves to "herd" the sheep.
