Trouble selling Seramas?

mine are'nt frail and they are easy to maintain mine stay out side and it drop's in the low thritys in the winter . they still hatch eggs and raise there young in the winter i think they are great birds ! just not many people realize what they are since the are pretty new to the chicken world.

I'm not saying Serama's don't have their place, but was a little irked when it was stated that Dominiques are boring... saying "I think ... are boring" is a lot different from saying "... IS boring".

Anyway, I think it's all getting off topic. I hope the OP has better luck in the future selling their birds, my only advice would be to try to get some 4H clubs involved in showing them to spread the word - maybe donating a couple of nice show cockerels to a club member would set the dominos into motion?

HI, Don't know if this will help.or maybe you have tried.
There is a peson in our state that occasionally has Seramas for sale.
I always read his adds because they are so interesting.
He takes the time to describe the bird, tell a little history and the purpose of owning them.
Hope this helps..........

Oh, and I am hooked on Seramas...... I have a few in the house and they are a crack up.

I actually have not had any problem selling my Seramas in this area. In fact, I have a waiting list for trios, pairs and pullets from my hatches this summer and fall. The same with my eggs...

I raise/breed Pyncheon Bantams and find the same thing. VERY small market for them.
Don't let other people's "helpful" advice bother you. Nothing new.

I agree with whoever said change your ad strategy. Sell the breed, rather than your individual birds. Tell how tiny they are, their history, over 2000 recognized color patterns, which essentially means "no such thing as a wrong colored one" some people would see that as a plus. Tell what size your stock is, and what size they generally mature out to. Tell where you got your start from, or what bloodlines you have. Show good pics that show they don't have wry tails. Weigh the parent stock and post their actual weights. Show a pic of them on a postage scale.

My favorite birds include both doms and seramas

I really really try to educate people
I do not make up names for birds or just call it something else becuase people know what that is
I use the proper terms and help educate people, so they can ask what a pullet is and what a cockeral is - instead of just saying 'its got feathers, its a chicken'
same thing with breeds
when I sell my muscovy birds, I write a big ole thing about what makes muscovies muscovies, why I love them, their history, their types, the flaws mine have, or the type/color patterns mine have, I am truthful about the pros and cons and again- I want my birds to be happy- so I want people educated, I give them links and lots and lots of pictures-- if they don't know what a muscovy even is, why would I WANT to sell my birds to them? Not that they have to know before they call me, but I hope by the time we are done talking they want to learn a little bit more - I try to encourage people to learn, and from my experience most people are eager to have someone take the time and teach them.

How many have you have had a seasoned chicken person at some point take the time to give you a tour of their place, teach you tips, show you how to do certain things, teach you about color patterns, types, etc etc ??? Didn't you appreciate that? I know I could spend all day talking chickens when I find a seasoned person who is willing to share. I hope to do the same, if I am willing to share my birds, I am willing to share my experiences along with them.
