Look at Rooster-Reds webite. He has a LOT of insight into this issue. I followed his instructions and was able to "fix" one rooster. The other just wasn't fixable and had to go. Hope that helps....if you can't locate it, let me know and I will look up the link.

Good luck

He is challanging you. It's time to show him you are the top rooster and no matter what he does it is not going to change.

Here is what I do.

1. Too late for this, but from the very beginning as chicks I always pick up, hold and carry around the roosters I plan on keeping. This generally shows them that I am much stronger and smarter then them and they usually don't even try to challange you. I have three roosters now and I can walk in and pick any of them up. They don't even try to get away, they just let me do it.

2. Once the rooster attacks you immediately need to turn around and go after him. Chase him down and give a soccer type lift kick. Before folks jump on me here is what I mean. Take you foot and get it under the roo and lift up and give him a helpful lift to the other side of the coop or run. Roosters when they fight do a lot of fighting with there feet and legs trying to knock each other off balance, this freee ride from on side of the run to the other shows him you are definately the stronger rooster. Once you do this go after him again and catch him pick him up and carry him around for 5 or 10 minutes.
Then for the next week go in and before you do anything else go after the rooster, catch him, hold him and carry him around a bit.
This method has generally worked for me. I did have on RIR rooster years ago that was bound and determined to whoop me and I could not break him of flogging me when my back was turned. (big chicken!!)

3. If the above fail, it's chicken and dumplings for dinner.

thanks for your help I will try your ideas and see what happens

I was given a rooster in the spring. He was a year old and had been living with 40 other roosters til then. Poor thing did not have a single tail feather of any description but a big bare bum. And a little bald patch behind his comb that looks a lot like one of my hens has right now... My hens treated him pretty poorly for the first week, until he stood up to a deer that came out of the woods into their midst... after which butter wouldn't melt in their mouths. Anyway, he was a shy thing and I gave him special attention with lots of treats, etc. His tail grew nicely, as did his pride, and he moved right into the role of protector and chief. About a month later I started to feel some little budges against the back of my legs that I thought was the hens running up behind me, but then I got a kick in the bum and realized it was the rooster. I did some research on the internet and started being more dominant in all the ways they suggest. I also started carrying a stick! In fact, I had sticks positioned all over the yard... just in case. It was pretty funny really because he had never done anything worse that the kick. He would, however, sometimes take a short run at me and I was more afraid of what he might do that what he actually did! The important thing is that the stuff worked in my case. I never feed him first now and don't let him do anything first. I always try to appear dominant and if he runs at all when he is around me, I shout at him to slow down and he does. I still haven't put away my sticks but I have to say I have never had another kick in the bum or anywhere else. In fact today I was laughing because I was sitting outside in a lawn chair when he walked over and lay down about 3 feet away from me and we relaxed together... almost brought a tear to my eye.

So there's hope!
