Trouble with hatchin bantam eggs.

I agree too..... It is correct that the chicks head is under the wing with its beak towards the air sac so it can pip and the legs/feet are over the head.....pipping takes up to 24 hrs and longer.........

Wasnt I reading somewhere (and remember this from someone who has yet to hatch their first chick) that if the humidity was off, either too low or too high, that the chick would grow too big and have trouble hatching?

So far the only times I had problems with the bantams hatching was when I had my pigeons incubating them, but that may have been because I was checking on them all the time

In my experience, if humidity was too high and the air cell did not grow large enough to keep the chick to normal size (and allow optimum air to breath within the air cell), the chick usually does not survive to hatch. What usually results in this case is a chick..internally pipped and deceased because it ran out of air before it was ready for the external transition. When they do manage to get out of the shell, they usually die on the hatcher floor and are known as mushy chicks. These are very smelly and quite upsetting. Ones that make it out of the hatcher and into the brooder often die within the first week as well.

When the humidity is too low, the air cell grows very big and the chick typically runs out of room for proper development. Usually, they perish quite some time before hatch. Even if it does make it to hatch, it will usually end up stuck the membrane and fail to emerge completely.

My humidity was holding steady at 55% and the temp in the water wiggler were at 99.5. I was very happy with everything because I never had to open it to add water because I have a syringe attached to a hose through the bator to put water in a bowl. On day 18 we put more water in the bowl and raised the humidity to 70%. This was the first time I didn't worry about anything. Miss Prissy look alike bator turned out great. It has been 20 hrs. and it doesn't look good. The chick is not coming out of the rest of the shell. My daughter is not going to wait any longer. I think it is too late. It looks exhausted, distorted and stuck to the shell.

Did your little one make it?

I helped one out of the shell last fall, and it took him quite awhile to fluff and stand up. It was pretty touch and go, actually, and I didn't think he would make it.


And.. now he's a fluffy black cochin cockeral with beautiful blond beach highlights

You'd never have any idea that I thought he was a gonner.

Well, since you already "started it" before it was quite ready, it is possible that the membrane has now shrink wrapped the chick. If the peeps are getting weaker, go ahead and start following the procedures for helping with that chick to hatch. How many others are in the bator. I suggest just waiting for those.

No, in fact in just passed. It was too weak. I waited too long. Shame on myself. I know some of you would rather not intervene and would rather wait it out, which is fine, but I can't do that. A chick can only spend so much time in the air cell before it suffocates. I guess I would rather try to help than not help at all. The other eggs have pipped also and that was 4 hours ago. I can hear them chirping and pecking away but nothing is happening. This is so frustrating. Please wish me luck.

Good luck. Tie your hands back and don't open that bator again for another minimum 20 hours!
