Trout in the Duck's Pond

Trout can do ok in a pond, but it would have to be cold. Bass would do good, but they eat baby ducks. Go for catfish, or as they're called here in the northeast, hornpout. Carp, such as giant goldfish do well in a duck pond. Cats and carp will also help clean the pond.............

youll need to get a pond aerator and keep feeder fish in it. most fish hatcheries have the regular shiner minnows or chubbys or bluntnoses or whatever your local vernacular calls them. but yeah trout require current and lots of oxygen and an aerator will keep both going.

Dave, where do you get the minnows you feed your ducks? Is it safe to feed them ones from the bait and tackle store or should I go to the lake and set a minnow trap?

I know people are saying bass.... But i wouldnt put them in the pond. Ive watched bass suck a ducklings off the surface and swallow it. No bass or stinky turtles

if i had my choice id get perch minnows and other small fish. id worry too about bass eating ducklings. ive caught many bass and found stuff bigger than a duckling in their bellies

Our ducks love the little feeder goldfish. Gone in minutes or at least the ones they could see. Once the water was yucky they couldn't see the dark ones and they got away

So I'll definately stay away from the bass. I was just worried about the ducks eating the fish not the fish eating the ducks. So we will have to discuss it some more. I have four ducks now and was thinking of 6 to 8 as my maximum. We are thinking of a pond around 30-50 feet across and 4 to 6 feet deep. I have a constant supply of water from April to October but need to give consideration to water levels in the winter months. Thank you so much everyone for the info - please share any other thoughts you might have.
