I haven't had a rumpless hen make it older than year, for different reasons. BUT I have a hen that hatched last year and is almost a year old. I am a bad chicken owner and haven't checked on the girls in the past few days(my kids have been feeding, putting away, collecting eggs etc) I went out to feed a special treat and realized my one rumpless black hen is not there. I was hoping maybe she is broody somewhere but I don't know. I haven't seen feathers anywhere

to indicate a dog issue (and my dogs haven't gone crazy). I have poultry fencing coming in the next week or so(was on backorder) because I know some of the other girls are laying elsewhere and I have found a couple of the places but probably not all of them as I get about 9 eggs a day and have 20 hens. I guess my question is do they go broody? I know some breeds do it more but I haven't had any at this time of year that were of laying age..

I've only had bantam araucanas, but yes, they go broody and make eggscellent mamas. My one araucana (I've had others in the past, but Harmony is my only one currently) is currently playing mama to some incubator chicks--I love it when I have a hen who will happily adopt babies without any sort of issues.

Yeah, they do go broody - Quite often in fact, and are great moms. (even roosters are good dads

) In fact a lot of Araucana breeders prefer to have chicks hatched and raised under a broody mom. Our own Araucanas are pretty young, but since breeding and hatching is a challenge, we're going to do all our eggs under whatever broody comes along.

I have four that have been broody for a month now. One is hatching W/BW ameraucanas today! Mine have been excellent mothers and hopefully that's what your hen is up to.

well, she came running this morning when ds fed them and let them out of the coop. He then watched her. She dust bathed forever and he was about to give up figuring she was just sleeping in a tree last night when she ran. He followed her and she went under our screen house. There is not enough clearance for us to get there and remove everything to put her someplace safe so we decided to take boards to block off access to anything that might hurt her. We will leave a space for the daytime and open it in the morning, close it at night. Not sure what I am going to do with these mutt chicks, I have never had a hen hatch anything before.....I don't have room for oops chickens if I want to do any of my projects
