Hi! Two of my chickens got Mereks and I found a cure that worked for someone’s flock, the two that got it are Ghost my leghorn mix(6 months) and Reaper my Partridge silkie(6-8 months) neither laying eggs yet, Ghost is being put down by the vet and getting a group cremation, it was too late for her, but Reapers just started today, she hasn’t stiffened up yet or gone too long without eating, she’s being a picky eater but she always expects treats when I bring her inside, she’s cautious about water because I tricker her into drinking apple cider vinegar, the things Im using to cure it are Hypericum a homeopathic liquid remedy, It goes straight from the dropper onto the top of her mouth to get it into her sinuses, it needs to in their sinuses, then there’s apple cider vinegar and Probiotics in water, I stretch Reapers legs and toes every two hours to keep them from going stiff, she’s already showing signs of some recovery, she’s more aware, talkative and cuddly, whenever I put her in her box she lifts her head as high as she can and starts bawking to come out, she’s sleeping on my lap listening to Lofi Hip-hop and trilling right now, she eats her mealworms and oats fine and has occasionally stood up when I was forcing her beak open to give her her drops.
Now for the rest of my flock I’m putting a humidifier in their clean and sanitized coop with the hypericum in it, the hypericum cannot go in a plastic humidifier, then it will take plastic chemicals out with it, it needs to be glass, I’ll be putting probiotics in their food and water of course and a bit of apple cider vinegar in their water, so far no signs of Mereks from the rest of my flock but my two silkies and my praire bluebell would cuddle with her.
I will be keeping this updated with the progress on Reaper and if my flock develops symptoms!
None of my chickens are vaccinated accept maybe RoadRunner and definitely Dill Weed, I do not vaccinate because my friend had a flock who died from Mereks despite all being vaccinated.

The ones if the white and grey chickens are how Dill and Ghost were, Dill still sleeps in the nesting box waiting for her, had to block it off so she’ll go back to rooster, Dill is the top of the pecking order and Ghost is the bottom, among my youngers.
I also burned everything that came out of the coop.

Reaper is still fine, she hasn’t been eating or drinking though so I’ve had to force feed her and make her drink with a dropper, we found the dissolvable 30x tablets of Hypericum so she’s having those, i believe it is her right leg that’s paralyzed, every time I stretch her it’s that leg that’s slightly stiff but the left is fine, still no signs of my flock having it as bad as them, no feather loss or paralysis.
I’ve started noticing she also hasn’t been pooping at all, could that be lack of food? I’ve been feeding her chunks of meat, mealworms, grain and oats every now and then

Basically.. if the vaccine wasn't given properly (at hatch) or allowed time for effectiveness (2 weeks) and if there was no possible way to quarantine during that time.. then ultimately the condition was human error and not on the part of the vaccine.. The vaccine has proven itself fairly well and it's efficacy is known.

100% death.. sounds like something other than Marek's.. even the most virulent strains don't cause 100% mortality.

BTW.. there is NO cure for Marek's but plenty of birds survive it and lot's of folks have them in their flock. What you are doing is attempting to alleviate symptoms.. not cure the disease. In older birds it often presents as slow wasting or crop slowness. Don't believe for a moment that it has gone away to never rear it's ugly head again.

How did you verify Marek's? What is their standard feed?

Meal worms and oats are not enough to sustain chickens.. and won't do much to help them recover.. Are you SURE you're not dealing with vitamin deficiency?

Sorry you face this, hope you do see full recovery! :fl

Yes I am sure, I brought one of my hens to the vet and they confirmed Mereks. The oats and mealworms are given to her because that’s all she’d eat while she was eating, the meat is cut up chunks of beef fat.

The ones she had that were vaccinated all came from a hatchery.

Yes sorry I’m bad with wording, a cure is more killing the virus all together but the remedies just help it pass through faster so she’ll recover faster.

You seem like you might know this… do you know why she’d stopping pooping? She hasn’t since yesterday despite being fed.

The feed did change recently, I think it’s called Alaska Mill and Feed, we usually have the normal bags you can find at every animal feed place with the yellow and white bags that are corn and soy free, i can’t remember the name of it.

Thank you, I was thinking it could’ve spread from one of the four flocks in our neighborhood

I totally forgot about eggs! I got reaper an egg and fed her some yolk mixed with electrolytes, I think that’s what they’re called at least, and more hypericum, then apple cider vinegar, then more yolk and as soon as I put her back she started eating her grain, oats, mealworms and meat mix then drank more egg

It’s the music! My chickens have always loved music but I’ve only been playing lofi hiphop to help her relax! I turned on pass the Dutchie and she stood up and walk a little bit! Only a tiny bit in the box but she did it!

She is very happy being able to groom again, loving the oats of course and occasionally eating egg but I mostly have to make her eat it
