I posted this a few days ago but had little response, which I don't understand. There are several posts each day from people whose birds show symptoms of what could be Coryza, so I'm baffled as to why there isn't much response for something that could prevent it. My original post is below. Also, I have a link to some info on the vaccine if anyone is interested. But I would really rather hear from some of you as you would be more likely to have heard of any side effects or other negative (or positive) info. Thanks, Sheri

Our grandson shows the Silkies at 4H shows so I KNOW they have been or will be exposed to this & other diseases. Even if we quarantine them after the shows, they could still have had enough contact to be carriers, so what to do? These are all pets so I refuse to cull & start over. I'd rather be treating 50 birds & giving shots every day for the rest of my life than to have to kill any of them. It would probably just happen again anyway. Seems to me that many if not most of the people on this board are in a position where their birds are in danger of contracting this crud (especially when you can carry it home from the feed store on your clothes), so why not just vaccinate against it & be done with it! I see all kinds of people posting what are likely symptoms of coryza but I haven't seen anyone recommend the vaccine. Are there some horrible side effects that I don't know about? It seems very affordable at around $58 per 1000 doses, so why hasn't anyone mentioned using it?
By the way, this is one of the most friendly & well educated forums I have ever joined, so I'm hoping some of you will have some knowledgeable & possibly brilliant answers for me. Thanks, Sheri

Hi I am currently looking at vaccinating my birds as well.... I dont know yet if I will. I was all set to, called to order the vacine and the man at the supplier talked me out of it, which is hard to do. My birds have off and on had symptoms of what my be coryza or CRD. dont really know which one since they are so similar.
Now it seems to maybe be back again so Im sick of this and I think after I get them well again I will be vacinating them.
I think before he talked me out of it because of the time and effort as I have 200 or so birds, but I think ill bite the bullet and do it anyway.

Hope that helps

By the way glad to meet another newbie like me

I dont know either, but hope you get some opinions too! (Edited to add - No brilliant ideas, but just some input

I believe you shouldnt give the vaccine to birds to actively ill birds, and that alot of people may feel that $58 is alot to waste if they only have a few birds...1000 doses! Whew! It does not keep, it has to be disposed of immediately, so it's a one time deal.

The vaccine is still no guarantee - the research I have been doing gives me the impression that it merely reduces the likelihood of an outbreak, and the severity, it's not a total prevention or cure.

Also, the first time you vaccinate your young birds, you need to re-vaccinate them after a few weeks - so that's an additional $58 for 1000 doses....Thats $116 for 2000 doses that may protect your birds from Coryza.

I havent tried it, but I'm willing. I have 72 birds of different ages. I will be getting more in the Spring, so I would like to have ALL of my birds protected. I dont show, but I go to shows, and to other peoples houses who have poultry. Not everyone practices safe Bio-security, and in my job, I go to some incredibly yucky living situations for adults, children, and especially for animals. No telling what I bring home.

I live not too far from you, in the bigger scheme of things. (Chico/Forest Ranch) If you decide to vaccinate your flock, and dont have 1000 birds, let me know. I'll go in on the purchase of your Vaccine!! I'll come pick it up myself, I love the drive down there!

Good luck getting solid information.........And WELCOME!!!!

Thanks so much to all of you for replying. I was beginning to think I was all alone out here! *grin* I'm glad to see that others are thinking along the same lines that I am. I will definitely check with FirstStateVetSupply & see what they say. Meantime, a bit more info...I did read that the vaccine also comes in 400 doses - not sure of price. I also read that it keeps for a year, but maybe that's only if it's not reconstituted. Something else to check into.

tfpets & anyone else within driving range - I'd be more than happy to split the doses. I'm not sure how many birds I have...I'm afraid to count them. Every once in a while hubby asks how many & I prefer to be able to shrug my shoulders & say that I'm not really sure...then I quickly change the subject or plead a chicken emergency & head for the barn! I'm fairly sure that I have under 200 birds & probably under 100 if I don't count Guineas & Turkeys. I'm a strong believer in "denial." What I don't know can't hurt me!

Once Thanksgiving is over & the rest of our kiwifruit is sold, I'll have some spare time to do some more research. If anyone else finds any more info, please post it.

Thanks again.

I sort of live there, I use round figures when I count my birds, and I know each and every one of them personally...I just dont know exactly how MANY there are at any given time...I knew every time one went missing this summer - it was awful - we had a skunk - thats how I knew I went from 90 something birds down to losing 30 plus birds, I knew who was missing!
Look forward to finding out what you're planning for vaccines!

Hello all!

I am also interisted in finding out more about the vaccinne. We have been battling the Coryza for a few now, and it plain stinks! I have culled 5 with it severe, and had 3 birds show aall the signs and get over it.

From what I understand, I can vaccine any new birds or just hope for the best...I don't have a clue after reading your vet talked you out of it.

I am sooooo thankful nobody has gotten sick in the last 2 days!! But I have the whole coop on vit/ele water and they are getting more spoiled every day

Have yall heard of Oxine?? I am in the process of checking into it and maybe using it regularly to keep the outbreaks minimal...I will keep updated as it unfolds. Anybody with Oxine info, please share!!

Happy turkey day!!

Greetings, I wish I had paid better attention and just joined in on your band wagon!!! Thank you Country for popping in on my "rant" as I was beginning to think that no one would notice and you being the first one to leave a note, I appreciate it.
Its interesting that all of these painful health issues can be preventive- but also at the same time, contagious to others that have not (A) been exposed (B) had the shots. Who would think a small time operation, I don't sell, I don't show, but to realize that I can/could bring any of these into my flock, just from the feed store, grocery store or even the poultry show walk through.
Either way, enough from me, I would love to hear more, be part of your educations and help out where I know enough to ask more questions.
Please see my Rant at: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1258159#p1258159

Thank
you and feel free to discuss this here or there, email or leave a message, I'd love to hear more!
Respectfully,
Kellie

Hi All,

I'm still searching out vaccine info & I think I have pretty much talked myself into vaccinating for the Coryzo. Jeffers Livestock has the 1000 doses for under $40, so even if I have to get another bottle for the 2nd dose, the price is manageable (barely). However, it may not be necessary to buy a second bottle. The picture of the vaccine on Jeffers site doesn't look like it needs to be reconstituted to use. It is just one container & looks just like my bottle of Tylan injectible that is already mixed so doesn't go bad the first time you use it. I read on a Cock-fighting site (Ugh-it turned up from a Coryza search) that there is a vaccine ABC that doesn't go bad right away. Also, there is a 500 dose vial available but I haven't found who caries it yet. So there are more questions to be answered.

Here are a few of the questions on CV that I still have floating around in my little pea brain.
1. Is there a Coryza vaccine that doesn't need to be used right away & can be held for a month to do the second round of shots?
2. Are those first 2 shots the end of it, or will the chickens need a yearly booster?
3. Is there a minimum or maximum age to give the vaccine?
4. I know the vaccine shouldn't be given to sick birds, but what about birds that had earlier symptoms that might have been Coryza or any number of other diseases. They could be "cured" carriers, or not. Probably, the vaccine won't help them if they've had Coryza and/or are carrriers, but will it at least NOT hurt them?
5. Is this vaccine like the ILT (Larangyo...something) vaccine, in that it will protect them but make them carriers that infect other birds when we take ours to shows?

Actually, scratch #5. Since Coryza, ILT, CRD, etc. are all so very contagious, as far as I'm concerned, anyone whose chickens are at risk should have them vaccinated. If I'm responsible & care enough about my birds to protect them, then I'm not going to feel guilty if being vaccinated causes my birds to pass something on to other birds. If I DON'T vaccinate, then others will & their birds will make mine sick. If I have to choose, I prefer that my chickies be the passers rather than the receivers!Actually, I likely will feel a bit guilty if my birds pass something on to others, but as long as my birds are nice & healthy, it's something I can live with.

I still want to check with the chicken doctor & see if he can answer some of my questions. Also, I'm trying to decide if I should vaccinate now or wait until spring when the flock & I all feel much healthier. Opinions please?

About OXINE. I did a search on BYC on Coryza & vaccines & came up with a bunch of pages to check out. Most of them were about birds with all the dreaded symtoms & there were a ton of suggestions for different med, special diets, tube feeding, remedies, etc. I cut & pasted anything I thought might be helpful in treating, curing, & caring for sick birds. One of the threads had a lot on Oxine & the many different ways it can be given plus several different dosage rates. There was also a link to an article on Oxine. To read it, go to www.shagbarkbantams.com. I haven't read it yet so not sure if it gives all the same info as I cut & pasted. If you want what I have so you can compare, let me know & I can email it as a Word attachment to anyone who wants it or I can post it here. Let me know.

If anyone else wants to help with the BYC search on vaccines, feel free but start in the middle or the end & maybe we can compare notes later.

wow, Sheri, you have been doing a lot of homework, huh?? hehehe, It is amazing what there is to be known...especially when our birds are sick!!

I would love a copy of your word doc...I have a ton of info, but if there is any more, I may need it.

We are going to do the 'ol "let it ride" approach for now. I am going to get some Oxine and do a monthly fog...from what I have read so far, it can't hurt them, only help.

Luckily, I work for a Farm & Ranch and can probably get it at a better price than from the websites.

Ah, please send word doc to [email protected]

Thanks a ton!! Have a wonderful day and hope the chicks are feeling better!!

Kim
