Trying my best to recreate this coop. Need advice please!

Did the frame for the nesting boxes today.
Communal or 2 boxes?

Coop is almost done and need to start working on run.

Give me your opinion on this design I came up with. Bottom 2.5 feet will be hardware cloth with 1.5 ft skirt and the top 3.5 feet will be chicken wire. Ill also have a 2x4 span the length of each wall where the chicken wire and hardware cloth meet. Ceiling will also be chicken wire.

All wood is borate pressure treated.
Should I raise the run off the ground with some pavers?
Paint, thompson water seal or nothing?


4x4 post by every corner that cant be driven into the ground.

I also have a few questions on what to use when connecting the lumber.

These wall parts at every corner to the 4x4 post (blue highlighted). Should I use screws or nails?

Connection on the roof.
Attaching the top roof piece to the wall (blue highlighted).

Looks good....
I suggest using SCREWS where ever possible. 2 advantages; Strength, and easily removed if you decide to make changes.
I also suggest you cover to roof over the chicken wire with some light duty tarps at least. Sun shade and rain. The tarps come in different colors like Blue, Green,Brown, Silver, and Camo. Whatever fits best into your yard decor.

This is a run I drew up that ill probably go with. It wont be as big as this.

What happened to this design...and maybe putting the coop inside the run to eliminate the awkward attachment??

Pressure treated wood is made to have ground contact, no need to raise it.
Screws always are easier to fix your errors, tho they may actually not be as strong as nails...depends on sizing.
Make sure you get screws that are made to be used with whatever type of pressure treated you have, the wrong kind of metal can corrode faster from the chemical treatment.

I decide to put the coop inside the run. Which will give me 16sq ft of shade from rain. Most of the run is shaded by a tree.

I liked that design but i think the roof line was too different from the coops which might make it look weird.

I think I will go with the coop inside the run, I agree that it won't be as awkward. Ill have to raise the roof of the run and see how much wood I use. Only got 25 2x4 to work with.

I also bought Thompson water seal today.

So now the coop will be 8x10 rectangle. Should the roof supports be a 10' piece spanning the length of the top with 4' pieces on the side connecting to it. Or 8' pieces spanning the width and have supports coming from the 10' sides.
Lol that sounds confusing. Ill draw it and show it.

Looks a little too crowded with the coop. Might have to go back to previous plans with coop outside

My suggestion would be to move pop door to non-nest end of coop then butt that end of coop up to the run wall and open the run mesh to the coop pop door.

Need some help with roofing.

How should I water seal this part where the lower roof meets the cupola wall? Silicone?

And the peak of the roof? I tried what I saw online by bending a single panel with a 5 inch reveal. But I feel like the shingle is gonna tear with such a sharp bend create a leak.

Probably should have done flashing, drip edges(on sides and bottom edge of roof plane), and shingles before the trim. That's show you'd roof any other building.

It might....may need to go to a metal ridge cap, bent a bit further to match your peak angle.

Google 'dormer flashing'.
Might want to nail down just the tab portion of the shingle, then flashing.

You can see here the tabs only where it meets the window wall...

I didn't know that haha. Its my first time building something like this. But good to know for next time. The project has been a learning experience.

I saw a YouTube video that said let the shingles soften in the hot sun will help with bending. He had a 12/12 roof so the peak was very similar to mine.

And what about just putting some exterior silicone where the wall and roof meet?
