Trying NOT to buy baby chicks

I bought 14 last week from TSC - not the breeds I wanted (I feel you SilverPhoenix). I went and bought 8 more from TSC again today (again, not what I wanted). Sadly, I take my husband and he stands there and tries to be gruff about it but he wants more, too. So, he tells me it's up to me. Yup. As if I am going to say no! At this point, 22 is enough. But... If they get some BAs or SLWs in, 6-12 are coming home with me.

This works as long as there are no chicks of a breed you would like to get. Instant gratification tends to override the semi-reasonable "I can hatch some of those, once I find a source.". My BR died recently (one of the coccidia victims) and there were BR chicks. Now, to be totally honest I didn't even get that chick myself, I asked a friend to get one for me! Of course, one cannot buy just one chick, so a RIR came home with the BR, just to be fostered for a while.

Whew! But at least the local regulations here do not count "immature offspring not yet of sexual maturity.". Redundant description, but it works for me. I won't count those! And I don't...

I only keep chicks inside until 8 or 12 weeks of age, depending on weather and availability of coopage. Current oldest inside are just six weeks old.
