trying to determine if my Ameraucana(supposedly) is a roo or hen

ok, so one more question now, assuming I have an EE rooster, what color egg laying hens would be hatched from him mixing with my red sex links? is the EE egg color dominant over the medium brown that my red heads currently lay?

Brown in dominate over blue (and white). You will most likely get green eggs if they lay light brown eggs. If you had marans or welsummers, or another dark brown egg layer, you could get olive eggs.

Assuming that the rooster has two blue genes and the hens have two brown egg genes then you should get some form of green eggs.
roo- with brown and blue hen- with brown and brown offspring- 50% green and 50% brown.
roo- with white and blue hen- with brown and white offspring- 25% brown, 25% green, 25% blue, and 25% white.
You see where this is going? So the offspring should get half from the roo and half from the hen. I am still new to the genetic, and if this information is wrong anyone feel free to correct me.

Brown + Brown= Brown
Brown + White= Brown
Brown + Blue= Green
White + White= White
White + Blue= Blue
Blue + Blue= Blue

wow! he is absolutely gorgeous! I am partial to blue chickens and blue and red together, but I think he is the prettiest example I've seen. I love my EEs! what did he look like as a baby? maybe I'll be lucky enough to find one like him at the feed store in the spring! lol

You don't know how many copies of the blue egg gene (if any) that he has. I'm going to guess he has one.

There are two egg shell colors - blue and white, blue is dominant. So, using this punnett square -

You'll get 25% of chicks with a blue eggshell color and 75% white white. As I understand it brown is an overlay of color; since your hens are brown eggers, 75% will lay light brown and 25% will lay a minty green color.

mama24: this is what he looked like when I got him, I was told he was a pullet at that time and between 2 and 3 months, so 8-12 week old. wish i had a better picture. when younger the chest was just grey and the red, now its laced blue and is amazing looking. I will get you a nice shot of the chest today. If you are looking in the spring, I could have some fertile eggs from mixing him with my red sex links a.k.a. "The Redheads" , and that should produce something similar color i think, and any pullets should be green/blue egg layers I think. I just emailed lady i got him from to see if she can tell me what the parents were or looked like, and if its known how many of the blue egg genes he carries, 1 or 2. I want to breed him, and I know i will hatch a few eggs shortly after I start getting fertile ones so I can def let you know what kind of chicks i should get to see if your interested.

very pretty! I actually have a gorgeous 9 month old EE pullet who is orange partridge with blue on her wing tips, tail, and a black beard. she lays green eggs. she's beautiful, and my son named her Pretty during that awkward ugly stage, before she developed her beautiful colors, and I was like uh, ok, Pretty (mumble mumble, we'll have to change that later, she's our ugliest hen...) lol. little did I know how right he was! anyway, I wonder if your gorgeous boy is the rooster equivalent of Pretty's more muted coloration.

if you are selling chicks or eggs in the spring, I may be interested! lol. are you anywhere near NC?

mama24, happen to have any pictures of pretty? I am right outside of Virginia, in west Va, but will be moving back into Virginia in April. I def plan to keep him at this point, he is very friendly and is great with me, my wife, 5 and 6 year old daughters, and my bird hunting dog(weimeraner), and most importantly he is good to the 2 pullets I already had, when they lay down he will stand over them, lets them eat first, and keeps a good watch. So, I will almost be sure that I will have fertile eggs when ever you are looking, or I can hatch a few a bit before you think you might be interested to get a few diff color choices for you. I live in an area that is very rural, with farms all over, so getting rid of chickens of this type are very easy around here so i dont mind hatching a clutch to get what you want color and sex wise.
