Trying to hang cabbage....someone help! LOL

I guess I'm just lazy, I roll the cabbage into the run. They chase and peck at it, and it's gone in no time. :cd

Like you, I've tried just rolling the cabbage on the ground. But my girls seem to like it better hanging up. But, they'll go after it either way. And it's fun to watch them jumping around when it's hung.
:weee

And would you believe that this is the first time I've used one of the little funny face icons!

I use a large cake/suet feeding cage. I quarter the cabbage and place it in the cage feeder which is hanging in their run. I also use it for corn cobs, bananas, leafy greens etc. I bought it at Petsmart for $8.99.

DH ended up hollowing out the center with a knife and we used a huge zip tie and some rope to hang it. Worked great! They were scared of it at first but thats ok with me, the more scared they were of it, the less pecking they gave to each other!

I simply thread a "screw eye" into the CORE of the cabbage, then just STEP OUT OF THE WAY!!!

Go to any hardware store & get a 3/8ths COURSE THREADED screw eye. It takes very little hand pressure to push it slightly into the core, then holding it in place, I spin the cabbage head onto the rest of the threads. I always have an audience standing @ my feet waiting for thier treat.

A simple cord, chain, or twine serves as a hanger from above. The birds have a "ball" picking & spinning this treat. Even the core disappears in a short time. Try it- you'll like it!

Just hang it so the cabbage is @ thier head height. This is a cheap (economical) easy way .And, --- it WORKS!

Drill?... Or me personally I would go to a farm store or the like and get a 'Cabbage Ball'. You put the whole head in it and it has a little chain you can hang it from. I thought it seemed like a cool idea.

.
So did my DH - but my chickens won't touch cabbage. Poor lonely head of cabbage hung out there all by itself and not one hen would go near it. Cut some of it up for them and they wouldn't go near it. Made coleslaw with some, they wouldn't touch it. have offered it several times and they just won't eat it. They love lettuce, kale, collards, spinach, broccoli and everything else but cabbage and carrots.

Just give them cabbage no other treat they will learn to love it.O forgot they will eat carrots but you need to grind them.
