Lock down is scheduled for 9:30 am tomorrow. I plan on following "the book" and leaving the bator closed but......

What exactly is the purpose of lock down?

If I candled the eggs on the 18th 19th or even the 20th day how am I harming the chicks?

You are changing the humidity of the incubator (and the temp) every time you open it up. Humidity at lockdown should be higher than the rest of the incubation period, to prevent the chick from dehydrating/drying out. If the chick drys out too much, it will stick to the membrane and will not be able to hatch.

In complete aggreement!!! Humidity is soooooo important. The first time you see one of your babies glued to the side of the egg dead, you will understand. Its so hard not to mess with them once they are on lockdown, but trust me....sit on your hands and leave the babies alone.

Good luck with your hatch
